I'm playing White for the first time and it's pretty fun. Difficulty seems to actually exist in this game which is nice. That or I'm playing retarded, which is possible.

Didn't like XY or SM very much and I honestly don't remember Sw/Sh at all. Pokemon needs to slow down with the mainline entries. Let them bake a little longer.

Black and White have the worst starters of all time and I was here since Red and Blue. In recent memory I liked Rowlet from Sun/Moon and Scorbunny from Sword/Shield. Violet and Scarlet have an abject failure with the gay dancing duck, the Mexican token fire croc is kinda fine if not for that flame bird on its nose, so Sprigatito kinda just takes the W by default.

We go back to Black and White and we have abominations after abominations with the starters. I totally get why they're called Unova abortions. There's not a single good one among them, Sceptile would be in tears if he saw this future.

Neither did GS,RS and DP. Why is it suddenly an issue now? Starters are not something that are available in the wild, they're only given to you at the start. You could say this for pretty much any other starter, but somehow Charizard is the only complaint that was considered valid.

Honestly, the issue was that GF wanted to have their cake and eat it to by cutting the entire national dex and replace it with not!versions of the original 151. I would've respected it a lot more I'd they didn't obviously try to recreate Ponyta and Voltorb with Blitzle and Foongus.

idk how people dickride gen 4 so hard when the overworld is a huge slog. i guess because of battle mechanics changes compared to gen 3, but battling is like the least important part of pokemon to me, i like exploring, collecting, etc... plus gen 5 and beyond had those changes, too.

I like Sinnoh for the reason you seem to dislike it, which is for its map. I enjoyed having this fuckoff huge mountain as the centerpiece to the entire region and the fact that you have to go through and around it multiple times, as well as how varied and interesting the map design ends up as a result of being situated around a giant mountain. There are other reasons I like it too. Soundtrack, its evil team, the vibes in general. I dunno. Also Cynthia is still the best champion in the series. It was just a fun adventure.

All of that said, I prefer gen 5, and I loathe that GF didn't just stick with their perfected 2D/3D style mix. Sometimes I think there's a world where GF stuck with that style of game and they ended up patenting it and Square Enix never got to invent the HD-2D style.

Say what you will about the designs, but from a gameplay standpoint the gen 5 dex was better than what preceded it. They actually use all the types, you can get ghosts, dragons, fires, etc. easily instead of half the dex being water and poison. It almost doesn't matter that the starters are so lame because it's easy to ditch them for more powerful alternatives.

It’s a valid criticism, but i don’t think the main point was ever about the pokemon liberation. It’s more about the power of propaganda and isolation. The story is really about N’s perspective on the human Pokémon relationship, and the ending is ambiguous because the theme itself doesn’t have a simple answer

Rent-free, but Gen V had shit designs for the Pokemon that didn't matter. However, that trend started with Gen IV.

A few days ago some people were talking about the exp system in nu Pokemon and how forced exp share breaks the game and discussing how grinding adds to the difficulty.

I think it's an understated part of how good a Pokemon game is to see how the level curve is and how easy it is to grind. I used to be someone who grinded a lot to always make sure I'm relatively even with the next boss but honestly in the games where I was underleveled I was having the most fun.

People talk shit on Johto for having a horrible level curve and while I generally agree(how the fuck is having my mons at level 36 for the E4 acceptable) facing off against the champion while being 14 levels weaker than him was so much fun it really challenged me. Same with Emerald, I was a good 11 levels lower than Wallace and he was a super hard fight because of it.

Compare that to Sinnoh where I was level 60 cause the shitty game made me use two HM slaves so I had even more exp on my mons and the E4 were genuinely boring, including the champion.

My point is don't grind in Pokemon games and you'll have a lot more fun.
