what went wrong?

If those shrines had an actual reason to exist that made sense and they weren't ugly and I was using the ALttP medallions and my sword didn't break all the damn time I would've had more fun.

I don't see a problem with the little secret spots where you do a little puzzle and get a heart container or whatever but those shrines stick out like a sore ass.

They did their Nintendo thing they do now-a-days. They make a really, REALLY good engine and then just build a small, almost tech demo-like world around it. Mario Odyssey is the outlier here, because they already had Mario's base movement since 1996, they just made it in a new engine and then got to making the levels. Other than that, every game since the Switch era started has been a really, really good engine and a really good gameplay loop, and a lackluster world.

BoTW is really good, but the challenges, maps and the dungeons are lackluster. DK Bananza is really good, but the levels themselves are lackluster and unmemorable (except for the fastfood carnival one, that one kicks ass). Mario Kart World is the first Mario Kart in a good LONG while to actually change the gameplay up, and what do they do? They make a bland uninspiring map with a couple of racetracks thrown in, and you barely spend time on those, you spend time on the lame highways inbetween. Bowser's Fury, which I guess can be excused because it was more along the lines of DLC, was extremely short, and the entire map was just blocks.

Their engine sucks

You are just wrong. I don't care if you don't like the games they make, but you can't say that the engines are poorly made. That's Nintendo Bread and Butter. They make really well polished game engines.

Actually, nothing went wrong at all. Why would you say otherwise?

That can't even run their games at a constant 30 fps? Nintendo tech sucks. Their thing used to be good design and they lost that twenty years ago.

That's a valid complaint, but I would wager most of that was due to working on essentially a slightly better Xbox 360. To be honest, the fact that they were able to get Tears of the Kingdom working on the Switch 1 AT ALL let alone at 30FPS is insane. They optimize and polish engines to an insane degree, which goes toward my original point. I'm not going to comment on their actual tech, because I agree with you, it blows ass, but you cannot tell me they don't make incredible game engines.

The shrines are boring and the only insentive to ever do them after the tutoriual plateau is reading online that you have to do them to get the shitty unbreakable sword.

I'm pretty sure more permanent heart containers and more stamina is an incentive.

I am not going to do the shitty copy pasted micro"dungeons" just to make the game more easy.

It's crazy how much fog there is in BotW. It's like every location has as much as the Forest Temple in OoT.

Pretty screenshots is the only thing that open world games have going for them, because once you actually bother trying to play them you realize how boring and sterile the worlds are.

Not OP and N64 was also a piece of trash. As I said, Nintendo tech was always shit. Seethe, cope and dilate.

Why waste time designing levels and dungeons when you can just let some formula copy paste dungeons across your open world and then you add a little change here and there?
