Disappointment after realizing any perceived difficulty and complexity came from the UI.

For the unknowledgeable, the Steam version of DF REQUIRES a new gen every significant* RAW change due to mods not being baked into the save anymore,
*For an idea of what constitutes a significant RAW change, see https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=29157.0

Graphics IDs are baked into each save, and require a world regen to see changes.

The path to the RAWs differs based on pre or post steam versions
(if 47.05- then raw\objects)
(if 50.01+ then data\vanilla)

The following are examples of simple tweaks you can do yourself with minimal effort
===============
How To Remove Gays/Bisexuals/Asexuals From All Creatures
Notepad++
open all creature RAWs (creature_X.txt)
ctrl+H
[CASTE:MALE]

[CASTE:MALE]\n\t\t[ORIENTATION:FEMALE:0:0:100]\n\t\t[ORIENTATION:MALE:100:0:0]

Replace in all opened files

[CASTE:FEMALE]

[CASTE:FEMALE]\n\t\t[ORIENTATION:MALE:0:0:100]\n\t\t[ORIENTATION:FEMALE:100:0:0]

Replace in all opened files.

--NOTE: If you want your Adventurer to not be Indeterminate(asexual), you need to change their Orientation via DFHack in two places--

view the Adventurer
gui/gm-editor in DFHack panel/window
write down the hist_figure_ID of the creature(you'll need it for the second part)
navigate to status > current_soul > orientation_flags
change as desired.

now type "gui/gm-editor df.global.world.history.figures" in DFHack panel/window
navigate to histfig ID > orientation_flags
change as desired.

DF is not in the state i hoped it'd be midway through 2025. rather disappointed. 15 years ago i was pretty convinced we'd have a magic system by now

blame the graphixfags and mousekiddies filtered by the old UI somehow despite the keybinds being on screen

Play the game, try to think of stories for your dwarves, don't be afraid to take risks and try new things. You'll probably lose your first couple of fortresses without doing much, but that's fine. Make use of the search function. For your first few forts, try to find a site with a river but no aquifer. An easy water source is a nice backup for new players, so your dwarves don't die of thirst when you inevitably forget to make alcohol. I actually prefer maps with light aquifers but they can be difficult to navigate unless you really understand how they work and how best to make use of them.

Beyond that, just remember that you can automate certain tasks (For example, you can set your dwarves to automatically make certain items if you're close to running out) and that you should keep your nobles happy. Seriously, make your nobles nice places to live as fast as you can. Sad dwarves go to nobles to complain and if they're crying on someone's shoulder in a shitty room both the noble AND the upset dwarf get upset by it.

I'd say play it and if you can't wrap your head around something then use it, or if you are modding the game, in which case definitely use it

not anymore. IMO this applies more to Oxygen not Included or modded factorio

Pretty much this. Because the game was inaccessible for purely technical reasons people were able to build it up as much more than it actually was, but when you actually play the game you realize that the culture around the game was 95% creative writing exercise.
The survival aspect of the game is pretty easy compared to others in the genre and there's not much game progression, it's trivially easy to get steel weapons and there's not much else to go for. The game has a lot of text but it's mostly inconsequential and dwarves are completely interchangeable. The only fun to be had is building your vanity projects, but it's not much to look at because of top down 2D look even with tilesets so at best you can just imagine it.
I could have the same experience by sitting on a couch and daydreaming as I would playing DF.

i hate people who crank up the difficulty and such in rimworld but always land on a year-round growing zone temperate forest region

like, try something new. deal with some fucking diseases and dangerous predatory animals

no there's no reason a UI overhaul would cause such a heaping delay in dev progress
Anonymous No.719021840
>>719021429
I don't get it either, I'd rather deal with resource limitations and other game mechanics than just have bigger raids to die in the killbox.
It's like fags just want to say they are playing on high difficulty but don't want to actually engage with the game in a meaningful way.

1 dev, already glacial development pace, so reworking his own silliness is likewise tectonic, as it took 5+ years just for the UI rework and it initially released with only half the fucking game as before and has been simultaneously playing catch-up with itself and adding in new things(LUA stuff and some mythic adv mode stuff so far and that's about it)
So yes, the UI rework caused by graphixfags and the filtered DID in-fact cause a delay
