What platformers from NES/SNES era are harder than DKC?

DKC isn't easy, but that doesn't mean there aren't much more difficult platformers. You know, like the Ninja Gaiden trilogy.

DKC is only slightly harder than the average game. Try Battletoads, Ghosts n' Goblins series, Plok, Castlevania 3.

It's not too hard, the only hard things are a couple of the true ending items; the rest of the game is fairly straightforward at least by today's standards.

NES games are harder. I never beat SMB1 or 3. DuckTales still filters me. Forget about Ghost & Goblins. All the Mega Man games are harder than any SNES platformer.
