The current state of gaming can be traced directly back to this cataclysm.

It was a long time coming, at least since the introduction of Kinect but arguably the moment Peter Moore stepped down. People forget how much Microsoft had to lose going into Xbone - for about 3 years, Microsoft coasted on the goodwill of the 360's early days as they pumped out Kinect shovelware. Their reputation was already on thin ice walking into this reveal, they NEEDED to not fuck it up.

360 had amazing start apart from RROD.
They had plenty of exclusives and actually tried to get some from Japanese developers.
Towards the end of 360 exclusives were mostly Halo, Gears, Forza and hardly anything else. Plus Kinect.
I was quite ready to jump the ship and get PS4 and then the Xbone reveal was the final nail.

The general sentiment at the time was that people didn't like the kinect because
a) it fucking sucked. it barely registered inputs correctly half the time
b) the motion control gimmick was tired by this time
Don Fagtrick tried to bind something no one wanted to the console's basic functionality. That's the real reason people didn't like this shit. People give up privacy for convenience all the time. The Edward Snowden shit was only a big deal to tech nerds and conspiracy theorists.
