We knew from the Kotaku retrospective article that we were never getting the massive RPG that was promised. We did get a decent action adventure shooter with RPG elements and minimal choice and consequence after about 2 years of bugfix patches and a fairly good but linear DLC.

Even today when I bring this game up with my casual irl friends, they'll be like "That game that was busted and broken?". So it's definitely retards playing this game if that stigma is still there years later.

I think it's the patches and fixes that CDPR released that is pulling old players back as well as giving new players confidance to buy it for the first time. Also the anime is a factor and indoctrinates new players.
I only played it on release and it was a 7-8/10 game (got points for beautiful world and atmosphire). That said, I did finish it, and all main side activities, and felt no rush to get it over with like I felt by the end of The Outer Worlds (which is a 6-7/10 for the most avarage, ticking-checkboxes, bare minimum effort put in a game ever)
