What went so wrong?

Loved in Japan, passed over in the US. People blame the dub for killing any interest, but I watched it and thought there was nothing inherently offensive about it, it's a fucking kids show to begin with.

Too Japanese. Much of it is alien and incomprehensible to anyone outside of Japan.

Extremely low prints. PS shelfwarmed by me and I'm kicking myself now for not picking it when it was $30 and still not selling.
YW3 was basically impossible to own unless you pre-ordered it on Amazon. I never saw it in stores once.

Busters/Blasters was also a limited print with more copies than 3 but less than PS.

When talking about this series, it's weird that no one seems to know or get that it's a comedy. It seems very obvious, but I swear I'm the only guy who brings it up.

The anime was WAY better than Pokémon which is the most formulaic tv show i've ever seen, every episode is either Ash fighting some random fag or meeting some Pokémon which he may or not catch

Yeah, but when there's a deluge of gags, the "time to laugh" music plays a lot, and there's a ton of yo-kai that definitely aren't inspired by folklore like this thing you have to go "oh it's trying to be funny"
I don't even want people to think YKW is funny, just that it's a comedy at all. If I were to come into one of these threads and read "these games are unfunny as shit and never stop forcing their crappy gags in your face", I'd be happy.

I was surprised my younger cousins knew of Yokai, I think it did have some popularity, I just don't think it was able to capitalize on it cause trends were moving FAST thanks to social media stuff.

pokemon was popular because it was pretty universal and captured the spirit of the 90s, you didn't have to be japanese to enjoy it

It did have some popularity in the west thanks to the dub airing on Disney's channel and it being pushed somewhat hard online with clips of it. It's just that the popularity was short-lived and they oversaturated the toy aisles consistently compared to most other brands.

Translating the Yokai names was the right idea and done well, the bad part of it is using dollars and changing random Japanese character names like Keita to Nathan or whatever Springvale's name was I'm blanking on.

They barely managed to get enough to translate Megaton Musashi and Fantasy Life, and it's pretty clear that all the money right now is going into making sure the next Layton game have multi-language dubs like the originals. Not sure about Inazuma Eleven, but Decapolice is definitely getting the low priority treatment.
Probably also the reason why they're investing so much in AI, they don't have enough manpower and budget right now.

In Japan, the franchise was rebooted like three times in a row after YW3 had like an 80% drop compared to 2, wasn't it?

Since the third game was all about going to the US, the anime reflected that by having a few subplots going on like a parody of X-Files. One recurring thing was having this character, Jerry, showing up out of nowhere, and being a combination between stupid and genuinely terrifying, since he gets a watch but never knows how to use it properly, he always has food on his mind and consequentially, a lot of the comedy is him eating the food-related yokais. This guy makes Hungramps recoil in fear, and even when he got shoved into a Komasan Taxi segment it wasn't enough to stop him.
I can tell the anime makers were having fun, but clearly someone did not liked the average burger, and i don't know who thought this might cause problems in the reception overseas.

I remember up until late into Shadowside they were at least fansubbed regularly, don't know how Crunchyroll did things because i've never touched the thing with a ten-foot pole.
In general, the adaptations of Level-5 stuff was always something the anime community never talked a lot. I think there were threads on /a/, but not that many.

I'm just saying, when I think of an American human from YKW I think of Buck since he was a main character in the game that came out in English. If Jerry is obscure to the Western YKW fanbase (I don't really know if that's true or not I only have my own point of veiw), I doubt he's a big reason for the west not being that into the series.

I'm gonna be frank. As a YKW fanboy, I don't really hold the gameplay in high regard. I just think it's better than Pokémon's. All the reasons I like Yo-kai Watch are outside of the gameplay, honestly. I think it's only really fun when you're fighting a boss and you restrict yourself in some way.

People don't worship Yo-kai watch gameplay, but fans will always defend the gameplay when it is attacked. Like Pokemon's turn based gameplay (or most RPGs really) of smacking each other and sharing turns or 'rollslop' in action games, Yo-kai Watch main games (until 4) were mostly auto battlers, where the common critique is that the game plays itself and you have no input. Like most of the other games I mentioned, there's always more nuance than just the basic complaint, but you don't need to know that to jab at the gameplay.

There's translation patches for everything not released in the west including a retranslation of YW1 if I remember right (I think it's a retranslation). I think you should give up on western YW anything after they ignored all of the Switch 1's releases here. Holy Horror Mansion seems like it's their next shot at trying to reach the west even if it's YW by another name.

Kinda based on them to go out of their way and make some middle-aged burger a holder of the Yo-kai Watch. Probably could've implemented him better but it's always refreshing to see adults get the "superpowers" of their respective settings in media mostly aimed at children.
