They aren't backpedalling on shit kek, Air Riders and Bananza were confirmed $70 literally the exact same time MK World was confirmed for $80. Nintendo just considers Donkey Kong and Kirby B-tier IPs compared to Mario Kart (in terms of sales, this isn't an inaccurate assessment). They've literally explained their gay variable pricing model before.
