Lego Island always had such a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere even as a kid. The whole island felt artificial and weirdly lonely even though it was populated by Lego people.

Even when the theme was just something like discount Indiana Jones, I always liked it more than the licensed stuff as a kid.
I don't think Lego even has generic coolish themes anymore like castle, pirates, or something as crazy as Rock Raiders was.
