I remember it came out at the same time as the dualshock 3. Vibration was somehow dropped by Sony in 2006 and then they brought it back a couple years later and MGS4 had vibration for every little thing in the game.

I was wowed at first by the graphics and the new gameplay elements, then confused by some of the story and gameplay gimmicks, then that confusion became annoyance, then by the end I was kinda angry, in between that I was nostalgia-baited by Act 4 hard.
Then I played MGO and I was having fun, then I learned more of the tricks that kinda feel stupid but entirely are necessary for higher level play like box spamming and every other hitbox shenanigans. Then the network got worse, then the lagswitchers showed up, then I stopped playing.

IGN gave it a ten. it got tens across the board. the fucked up/weird thing is that maybe it was the first game to recieve universal acclaim like that and then sort of fade away into the public subconscious? MGS5 has had a more lasting cultural footprint, but wasnt heralded as a msaterpiece upon release nearly as much as 4 was.

one thing that nobody talks about with this game: the ipod nano usable item in snakes inventory actually had a PODCAST on it about the creation of the game, that you could listen to while playing. the game was literally ahead of its time in a multimedia sense.

Very excited leading up to it, a little disappointed by the game overall, mostly felt like there were too many cutscenes and the levels were kinda boring, the final third of the game or so and especially the ending completely justified the purchase for me. As I got older I liked it less, but after MGS5 I circled back to liking it again.

It exposed the world to how much of hack Kojima is

It was a decent finale to the series

I loved every single second. Yes even Act 3. Yes even the Big Boss reveal at the end.

Time has proven me right. No one has this on their top games lists. No one mentions this in the same breath as the trilogy. Everyone knows this is the black sheep of the series along with the portable games. It was like the last huzzah of that gaming era before everything went into a deep dark age for the rest of that gaming generation. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Halo, Doom, Quake, Rainbow Six, Mega Man, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Sonic, Final Fantasy... basically every big franchise went to shit around that time and wouldn't recover for years. It was bad. For MGS4 to be the only one to release a good sequel was a massive achievement.

It was awesome, but a lot of the cutscenes were very long. I didn't mind the long cutscenes since I was used to the previous MGS games, so I had a really good time with the game. I played the multiplayer for ~10 minutes and was bored.

I remember going to my older brother's friend's house and was blown away by all shit people hate MSG4 for, I thought the install screen while Snake smoked was the coolest shit in the world and it felt so futuristic despite being a literal 20 minute long loading screen. It was like the game was so advanced that it had to hack the console just to play it.

MGS4 is a piece of shit but Kojima sure was still good at making cool as fuck tech demos for consoles that appeared way more advanced than they really were, and it impressed by dumb little teenager brain who was still rocking a PS2 in 2009. MGS4 gets the surface level details spot on, too bad about everything else.

I picked up the special ps3 with it. I had heard that version of the console was the last to be PS2 backwards compatible so you bet I snagged one. MGS4 was amazing. Glad I got to light up a smoke with Snake during the mandatory install sections. It is also possibly the worst entry in the series. Worse then Snakes Revenge. And I like the game more then half the time. I don't regret it. But man fuck MGS4 sometimes

the campaign was the most I had ever been disappointed by something not irl, I don't want to sound too dramatic but it was like a massive slap of reality

It was incredible. Graphics blew my mind, combined with the tone of the game it made for one of the most immersive experiences I’ve ever had. Great conclusion to the series and still one of my favorite games. Had years of fun playing MGO2 with friends and when trophies were implemented a few months later it was a good excuse to play it again multiple times in different ways, collecting all the weapons, emblems and stuff. This was the same year as Fallout 3 and GTA 4, world at war and Deadspace, so I remember this year fondly.

Its a game thats so impressive from a technical and cultural standpoint that the faults are easier to ignore, especially in retrospect imo.

TLOU2 is the only game afterwards that even attempted the same kind of vibe, but still barely counts, since its clearly tryping to ape MGS4 instead of actually being its own thing.

MGS4 being remade or remastered would also detract from the very themes of its game, let MGS4 die, let Snake die. It was a one of a kind experience that should be left at that.

Didn't really develop many characters all that well. But aside from that the big reason it is bad, trying to be the big climactic ending and tie together a few games that don't fit together directly. The part when they fire up Rex to escape by blasting through geckos after an emotional scene right after a boss fight with Vamp while the soundtrack is building up was absolute fucking kino, one of many memorable moments from MGS4.

Absolutely sad how /v/ is incapable of nuanced discussion about games. MGS4 wasn't bad, what game was there. It was entirely stable and had a good engine. It was a precursor to the style of gameplay 5 would have. Yes, it was mostly cutscenes and that was a bad decision on Kojima's part. The ending is still one of the greatest endings to a video game ever.

The first two acts at their best are MGS3 but worse and when they're anything else they're just crawling by people shooting at each other. Act 3 is a snoozefest and then a snoozefest on rails. (I actually like sneaking past the gekko and ball robots, but there's not enough meat on that bone to sustain what is nominally 1/5 of the game and there's not all that much of it anyway.) Then act 5 has a good start but then ends almost as quickly as it begins. It's not as good as what came before it but it was still solid (no pun intended). Coming off of the movement and aiming mechanics of the original trilogy, the difference 4 had in those regards were a breath of fresh air. It did something new for the series so I expected there to be issues but it was trending in the right direction.

I never understood those syringes that Snake used. According to Naomi, they're used to suppress Snake's nanomachines when they go nuts. This was specifically for when Liquid shut down SOP; even though Snake wasn't really under the system's influence (and thus wouldn't have to deal with PTSD overload when the system shut down), it still affected the first generation nanomachines in his body, hence the severe vertigo he experienced when the system was temporarily shut down. So I understand that the syringes help with that.

But why does suppressing the syringes also help recover Snake's psych gauge? Does suppressing the nanomachines make Snake feel better? Does that mean that they're actually constantly causing him pain under normal circumstance? And what about the syringes that Ocelot had during the final boss fight? Microsoft had to go all in on western games because no Japanese devs wanted to make games for a console that had zero presence in their domestic market. I had a PS3 and played MGS4. I remember that the game was too fucking easy. Not anything to do with skill, just that there were too few enemy patrol. You're given a whole arsenal of guns but you can't even empty the magazine on your pistol before the next map transition segment.
Also the whole time I wished that the camo was dynamic. It's not. You have to be still for it to blend in.

Eye melting good. It wasn't just one of the first HD console games, and was extremely well done too. People call it a movie but there's a lot of detail/replayability in it. Zero patches other than removing the online component too.

MG2, Snatcher, and Policenauts also have good story and the guy you are talking has admitted he did very little for the main plot in any of the games he worked on. All he has on his own is Ghost Babel and the Metal Gear Acid games. Not a top tier resume there.

4 is the ending to the story the wrapping up of like 80 years worth of shit, thats why every game after story sucked dick cause theres nothing left to explore (it ends up as big boss was evil but really good really and shitty characters like cold hard man and strangelove)

I had a good time from what I remember seeing as I liked mgs3 but then I always, ALWAYS remembered I fucking despised act 3 with every fiber of my being and wish I could never play that part again, it's pure filler

Kojima is a freakin otaku ofc MGS4 was bombastic, altho i tried playing it again recently and i'm not sure if the newer ps3 models couldn't keep but i definitely noticed the dipping framerates more than usual. That said MGS4 would be a great candidate for a HD remaster *wink wink :D
