The melody in the Clown stage isn't very good. It's basically a chromatic scale with no direction at all, plus the song is in 4/4 time which is supposed to give the melody all the time in the world to drive home a memorable jingle, and it doesn't even do that.

Compared to other songs, which aren't even trying to be wacky, and end up extremely memorable, I'd say it's a very anemic tune. Take Daft Punk's Aerodynamic for example, fun little ditty that's intense, fast and extremely memorable, then it's over.

well, it's ionian and lydian with a key change, not chromatic, and I believe you're confusing the lead with the melody, which is why you're saying it has no direction and is chromatic. i don't know too much about circus music but it's meant to imitate calliope (steam organs) and bell music you would hear in ringling and European circuses mixed with drum machine and pad. i don't think it's good either, but I see the intent. reminds me of shit like sonic green zone and a ton of other random trash music. i don't really think it's any worse than the shock troopers song, which is 4 notes for the duration

that's what it is and what basically 99% of rhythm melody lead comps are. the composer gets cute with some accidentals but it still isn't chromatic, because it's less than a measure.
