I didn't get into the fighting game but AW is fast and responsive, same basics as FF except much easier to position yourself. It's designed around detachable mech arm weapon pickups that are extremely strong if you know how to use them, like a laser sword or drill arm. There's also ranged pickups and a default ranged gun with a dozen bullets that's actually very powerful because it lets you approach most enemies safely.

Yeah it's basically about crowd control by using the Z axis and other mechanics like throws. The original FF formula has other stuff like squads of ranged enemies who will run out from one side of the screen at certain points. That's the memorization aspect of arcade design.

No modern retro throwback covers any of those angles, all of them are gaudy casual crap. avp is an extremely broken game, but also an insanely fun game that covers all those angles. on the other side of the spectrum is ddsom, which also covers those angles, but is more about meticulous planning and perfect OTG loops where if you miss even one your run is ruined. no one, especially not "boomers" are going to play games like those. they want no obstacles and fast gratification.

It's actually pretty cool. While the human female had a pistol, the human male had a robotic or cybernetic arm that also had firearm embedded into it if it makes sense. The third and fourth playable characters were both Yautja/Predators and you could use their shoulder cannon.
