He was bargain bin CJ. Trevor had his antics and Michael had his family. Michael had nothing but depression and every arc surrounding him was just punching down. His ex going off to fuck a doctor and leaving him with some "be better" message was whack.

franklin was the rookie. small hustles for chump change with lemar dragging his ass into shit that was going to get him killed if he kept going.

Him meeting Michael was like franklin getting an mentor, pulling him out of small time, small score crime into stuff that paid better, needed more, etc. It gave the game a way to look at it that wasn't jaded, old time heister and his currrrazy druged up psychopath.

I don't think rockstar is going to go full on child sociopath crimer, but Franklin was the closest you could get to a criminal focused hero's journey.
