I'm a poorfag who's always used cheap mini PCs. Seems like these can get around the same performance and be docked to a monitor so considering doing that for my next replacement.

I do and it just kinda sucks so I never use it. It's too big to fit in anything comfortably and requires to many accessories to be comfortable to use, it's like you're hauling a camping setup everywhere you bring it. Just emulating games on my phone or settling for the switch port because I can fit both in my pocket has gotten me gaming way more than the steam deck ever did.
The only use case it has those two cheaper EDCs don't is emulating high end systems and PC only classics, and both can be done over moonlight if you have a stable connection, yknow like when you're slacking off at work or school. So basically the only reason to get one is if you want specifically PC only titles or 7th gen consoles while on a bus or plane, which is so niche you might as well not bother unless you fly for a living and have a multi hour commute.

Replying to an older thread. I think 2560x1600 for the Deck 2 is a better res as they can maintain compatibility with Deck 1 performance targets and it's a common screen res used by other handhelds. The smallest atm is 8.4" and that requires enlarging the current chassis size by a cm to both height and width. Since they managed to move over 6 million units by now, Valve could possibly commission a smaller oled to fit and maintain the original Deck chassis size.

Like I said if your use case is that you live on a plane and need PC only titles on the go, sure, you probably earn enough that a deck is a drop in the bucket and can fit it in your luggage, but nobody else needs one when a switch is under 100$ now and you already own a phone.

Anybody else have issues with requiring a hard restart while emulating? I was running dolphin and tried to take a screenshot which you can't do for some reason, and it only happens with dolphin. The controller was unresponsive, the deck itself was unresponsive. Even trying to close the program or alt tab didn't work. I held the power button down for like 10 seconds while it went to sleep and woke up repeatedly before finally restarting.

I was thinking of buying a knockoff from Asus since I don't care about Steam

I picked it up again a few days ago and the power button doesn't work to put to sleep in Game mode. Works in Desktop mode, works by using the menu option, and works to wake it. The thing is always having weird obscure issues. I'm not sure if I would buy an updated model if they released one

I got it working on Heroic. I had to switch from the Flatpak version (installed through the Discover store), to the AppImage version of Heroic you can download from their website. Assuming you're using the decky plugin, you can then add the required string to the beginning of the launch options like pic related.

Bro I play Melee. Gimme wireless GCC with same latency if you find any, not gonna try and get used to different latency because that if any fucks up gameplay. And I have tried to play with wireless and even 5g and my God the ping spikes.

Bit esoteric but the chink controller I just bought by mobapad (HuBen 2) has a lower input lag than even the dualsense wirelessly. Problem is you won't like the shape because it's no gamecube controller. And it only does 1000hz polling rate through a dongle. I'd play competitive melee with this shit though. It's preinstalled with everything it needs to do what it does best. Valve put mad effort and money on this thing working. They got HDR working on linux on their end 2 years before people even bothered on the normal display servers.

It's a shame because I got one for cheap for emulation purposes but the dpad has been absolute hell. Illusions of Gaia, with its heavy use of diagonals for movement, was almost unplayable.

I got mine last week and it’s amazing. I love lying in bed and playing games without needing to go to my PC. Yesterday I set up EmuDeck and started playing several of my childhood PS2 games, though I had to redownload them since the European versions only run at 50 instead of 60, which I didn’t know before. Still it’s been great fun, right now I’m playing Ratchet & Clank 1

The latter, it's pretty much set up for you.
You just go into desktop mode, find your folder with your pirated game or whatever, right click on the .exe, add to steam and in many cases that's enough. If you gotta install it, you can download a launcher called Heroic.

SteamOS is Linux. To install non-Steam games, you need to go to the Deck's desktop mode and install a program like Heroic or Lutris. They let you install games from other store like EGS or GOG, but they also let you install pirated games. Once you have added a pirated game to Heroic or Lutris, you can create a shortcut to it for Steam and it will show up like any other game you have installed from Steam.

I prefer to use Heroic myself, it's just simpler. I would recommend you download the AppImage version from their website instead of downloading the Flatpak version from the Discover store. Just save the AppImage file to the Desktop and tap it to launch the program. Inside Heroic, you should go to 'Wine Manager' and install 'GE-Proton-latest' (it may do this automatically, I don't remember). Then you go to Heroic's 'Library' section and press the button that says 'Add Game'. Fill in the game's name and it should automatically fetch the cover art if you wrote it correctly. If your game has an installer, press 'Run Installer First' button and select the installer .exe. After a few seconds, the installer should show up. After you've done installing the game, press the little folder icon in the 'Select Executable' box and choose the game's main .exe file. After you press 'Finish', you're done. Try launching the game inside Heroic to see if it boots correctly. If it does, somewhere in the menus, there should be a button that says 'Create Steam Shortcut' (you can change Heroic's settings to make it automatically create steam shortcuts when you add a new game). That's all there is to it. Go back to Gaming Mode and enjoy your pirated game.
