Brownoids and third worlders abused the old system to the point where the lead devs were chimping out over the absolute subhuman trade behavior. The game isn't deterministic enough to make every build SSF viable so you have to rely on trading to get out of the occasional rut.

I assume you haven't played Poe much. Yes, the lack of a market is a big problem, at least up to now. It can be very difficult to obtain really good items, let alone unique and even more so good corrupt items. Even I, who prefer to obtain all items myself, avoid SSF because some items are very annoying to get, even though they are cheap and not rare at all. Even if you just want to play the game you still need keys to unlock certain activities and getting them yourself is a pain in the ass and they cost literally nothing.
And yes, as another user pointed out, the current trading system is fucking garbage

When skills are tied to not only specific skill gems, but also specific uniques it can get very tiresome to farm it all yourself, especially in a league which only runs for x months.
Most of the issues went away with the currency exchange because niggerfaggot price fixers couldn't shit up the market anymore but it is equally frustrating trying to buy non-currency and have to wade through 10+ whispers before you get a person who isn't price fixing.
But I digress, the point isn't to buy ALL your gear after farming currency like an autist, it is to buy lynchpin stuff or fill out a specific slot that you aren't getting, max out resists with a specific piece so you can actually get back to playing the game, etc.

The last time I played PoE I played like 200 hours over 3 weeks and when I hit the wall where diminishing returns rapidly ramp up I stopped playing and felt suicidal just thinking of all the time I wasted

Play Deadeye if you want. I know PoE2 crafting is a meme, but making mid tier gear with essences should be easy now. And if chaos orbs are cheap early on you can make triple T1 prefix items by fracturing a mod, chaos spamming a second and sinistral/dextral exalt + 50/50 annuling the third until you hit it (back to chaos spam if annul trolls you). If you're paying trade prices for anything over early endgame gear you're prob being scammed.

Its fine in PoE1. Scams in that game are rare, haggling was a bit more common last league but still rare, bad trade etiquette like listing in dumb tabs and raising prices constantly was very rare.
Meanwhile in poe2 its just retarded third worlders constantly scamming, haggling, using dump tabs to raise prices and such nonstop to the point where trading in that game is a miserable experience entirely due to the playerbase.
Apparently 0.3 is adding Chinese servers locked specifically to China, so I'm hoping that will alleviate some of the problems too, but I'm not holding by breath.
Chinese firewall is a great thing, and we need a firewall for India and other third world shitholes too, none of them can behave.

I play SSF in poe1 sometimes, but SSF in poe2 is miserable until there's a proper form of crafting. The new orbs are a step in the right direction but annuls are insanely rare for SSF and scours dont exist so gearing up is grim.
