I realized that at some point the fanbase of a piece of media changes for the worse. There's usually a threshold where the game gets too popular and the normies move in or the basement trolls looking for attention and it's not worth reading their opinion. The honest truth is that not every opinion is worth the same especially when exposed to the internet.
Take movies for example. CinemaSins has done irreparable damage to the concept of online criticism. By focusing on humor and barely double checking the script they have created an environment where it's ok to shit on some movie for banal things or claim there are plot holes which are literally explained seconds later. And then you have the normalfag who has barely seen other media and has some weird expectation of what is supposed to happen in the movie and they get buttblasted when it doesn't. Some people don't even know HOW to watch a movie or show; by that I mean they are on their phone most of the time or just have the media in the background while doing something else - meaning it's somehow the media's fault for not doing exciting action stuff to grab their attention.
/v/ opinions on vidya are mostly worthless. Anons have commodified meta commentary as entertainment meaning you don't even have to interact with the property to have an opinion on its quality.

I dont consider fanbases bad if the only thing that makes it bad is faggots on twitter/discord. If the fans of [thing] are still annoying niggers even on 4chinz then that's a case of the fanbase genuinely sucking ass.

The issue with fanbases (and online communities in general) is that it by definition always filters out the highest quality people due to how free time works.

Children, unemployed people and the like have way more free time. Thus they will dominate activity in any online community. People that can actually contribute high quality stuff see the activity and get turned off since their free time is scarce and valuable anyway.

This combined with people getting bored and developing a "in-group META" results in people being contrarian at all costs, Baiting, bad-faith arguments and weird interpersonal relationships.

Look at /vg/ generals. But also /v/, subreddits and the like. This is also why the internet got worse. In the past when people got bored they did something else. Now they waste time on the internet dragging quality engagement down.

Not that old forums were any better though they were some of the worst offenders.

This is why I always try to actually contribute to any online discussion. I am always genuine and never ironic because those are the most damaging type of behavior you can display. If I'm bored I do something else.

I'm not part of any Fandom or internet community because of this.
