Did games actually get dumber?
Old game
>Encounter an obstacle
>Have to figure out what to do by examining your surroundings and thinking for yourself

New game:
>Get to obstacle
>Character is scripted to say "Wait a minute, that [Item]" after 5 seconds
>"Maybe if i switch to [Magic vision] i can see what happened here"
Fucking Freddi Fish has more depth than many modern games

I liked hint guides for hard puzzle games. Sometimes just a nudge in the right direction was cool.
Has to be out of game otherwise the temptation to press the hint button when you're playing is too high.

Good luck doing this from your couch with your huge viewmodels, low FoV and dual analog controls. You can't even click on objects to interact with them due to imprecision, you just rub yourself against objects until the interact prompt pops up.
The descent into our current hell is because no one has any standards for anything anymore, so poorly managed products are eternally on the "fix it in post" step.

Comparing Elden Ring to older games by the same company, in the same genre it was weird how many different people tell you that you can bypass that big lift to Altus Plateau.
But I can't think of other examples of dumbing down the game.
I think it's overstates at this point. Yea there is a lot of handholding in AAA games, but that's been the case for what? 15 years? more?
You still get games that respect your inteligance, and you also get people on /veee/ screeching how it's anti-fun, artificial difficulty and so on.
The amount of people who kvetched that you were expected to orient yourself where you're on the map in Hollow Knight is evidence enough that people are that dumb and need the handholding.

Yes. That example from Valve, where they redesigned the level because a single game tester was unable to navigate a 3D environment, to the point of going around in circles several times without realizing it, is the best example of this. Good game design, especially in the Western developer's mindset, is error-proof game design.
That proves that we are no longer in the field of video games, where you have to learn the rules to avoid mistakes, we are in the field of interactive experiences where the idea is to offer a medium that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their ability and commitment.

Not only games, but people too. Students don't even write essays anymore, they have AI do it for them. And when they walk outside, they just stare at their phones. It's fucking over because this generation will be fucking useless.

Videogames are not made for a minority of nerds anymore, they're intended to appeal to everyone and that includes the hordes of braindead children out there who couldn't even do 12x7 without a calculator. Hence games need to become increasingly dumber and handholdy.
Anonymous No.719078928
the worst offender are modern pokemon games. Like 50% of the "play" time is just cutscenes and handholding.

That's still not the cause. That's an environment in which the cause (cancer) can flourish. The root of it is corporations, mindless but aggressive runaway growth applied to an economical model to begin with, ran by psychopathic managers. "If we don't sodomise and burn infants alive to make line go up harder, someone else will - and get too far ahead to catch up." Honest business can't survive with this completely immoral competition because they will stop at nothing, stoop to any low to destroy anything they see potentially threatening (which is everything because cancer) because they project their MO on others. And not appealing to the broadest audiences while milking them so dry they fossilize is waiting for the equally inhuman competition of those suits to jump at the opportunity.
The world really ended in 2012 seems like.

When I played God of War (2022), I had Kratos telling me the solution to a puzzle before I even knew there was a fucking puzzle in the room. That game is one of the worst offenders of this shit.
Also, play Northern Journey. There's a little bit of hand-holding sometimes, but it respects your intelligence most of the time.

>>you had Nintendo Power
The number of guides published in Nintendo Power are greatly exaggerated. As are the extent of said guides. Also, Nintendo Power wasn't free.
>>you called the hotline and got your ass beat when the phone bill arrived
Or you didn't because those phone calls were expensive and inefficient.

What people actually did, when they didn't just play the game by themselves or with hearsay from friends, was that they'd maybe use their dial up internet to access gamefaqs and pray that someone had uploaded a text guide and that said guide wasn't bullshit.
But this idea that old games were all built for guides and that everyone needed and used guides to beat them is some ridiculous zoomer rewriting of history.

To be fair, I think the validity of giving the player the answer depends on how well it’s communicated. Sure, you could say that the devs are lazy for doing that instead of designing the game cleverly to communicate how to deal with certain obstacles, but there were plenty of lazy devs back in the day that would badly communicate solutions and also just not tell you anything at all.
Anonymous No.719089972
>>719072284 (OP)
Major devs bring in play testers to run their levels and play testers apparently have IQ in the negatives and can barely solve a puzzle with someone screaming the answer through a megaphone next to their ear. I hear they mainly recruit from /v/.
