Having everything they do rely on one hardware pillar that, if flounders, takes everything down with it for nearly a decade and they just have to pray the next one doesn't also fail, is an incredibly risky and stupid business model that has slowly been getting chipped away at over the decades. Nintendo only seems like they're doing the best they've ever been because they're fleecing the shit out of their consumers harder than they ever have. They're still selling a hundred million less hardware units and half a billion less software than they were 20 years ago and are on one hardware like left with nothing to fall back on. Something's gotta give, and they know it.

Once you stop trying to support a console your output declines massively. Their current priority is variety and covering multiple audiences, once you lose that incentive your output shrinks to either what sells well or what serves a gap in the wider market. Most of Nintendo's output is just X genre but for tendies, once you're on pc that genre is properly represented and their version of it is no longer that appealing.
