The party gets branded by some mark of the beast that makes them untouchables that are actively hunted and kill-on-sight for 99% of society. So they band together and flee from place to place for 80% of the game, 10% is that big open world area with absolutely nothing to do and the last 10% is the party deciding to stop running and fight so they kill the pope.

Superpope was weirdly a fun villain considering how utterly uninteresting his plan or the rest of the game in general was. He was having way too much fun personally fucking with the party.

It's kind of funny, that you literally won't know the plot or lore or what's going on unless you read the codex, or whatever you call the text dump that describes characters and such.

For the uninitiated: when people die their souls go through a "door" to the afterlife or the unseen realm. Barthandalus wanted to kill tons of people at once to "throw the door open" and "gain access to the unseen realm" to absorb it's power/become immortal. It's all way above your party's paygrade, except they happen to get dragged into the mess by l'cie enslavement and such.

I never played Lightning Returns. Does it have any good soundtracks?

The only one I remember liking was the final boss fight, which had some amazing parts, but also had some generic filler noise so it could arbitrarily be 13 minutes long.

Lightning and by extension Hope were intent on fighting from the start, Snow was just planning to ramble about how Serah's will must have some influence on the focus Anima gave them all somehow but through this he was always looking to fight against whoever wants them to destroy Cocoon. Sazh and Vanille went straight to running away but gave up after the theme park and Fang had her own focus that she was trying to help push Vanille along with.

Machine gods and especially Bart were gaslighted by tranny God Lindzei that their God is beyond the gates (he's not), the party was gaslighted by Bart then to destroy Cocoon, cause the prophecy said that Cocoon will fall, but did not indicate under what circumstances. Bart does not control the situation, which is his special quality as an antagonist: he pretends that everything is going according to his plan, but in essence he is also not sure of the final goal of the plan and is playing the cards blindly.

Part of that is because you won't pick up a lot of lore if you don't read the in menu datalog. But also, the developers created a pretty complicated lore which was supposed to serve as the overarching mythos of an entire series of games known as "fabula nova crystallis." This did happen, but there were supposed to be a bunch of games that fell under this umbrella (it included type zero, and was supposed to include 15) probably among other games, and this lore would get properly fleshed out along all of the titles.

The developers basically admitted they fucked up and trying to make a mythos too big for one game, made each game feel poorly defined and vague in their plots.

Well here's the funny thing. I cannot see myself enjoying this game any more if it made auto battle unviable. Because at that point it would just become a timed menuing simulator and that wouldn't be fun to me either.
Having to input 4 different things just to get one guy moving so you can input 4 different things before the next guy has his bar full just seems tedious.
I just really disagree with the entire approach of this combat system.

Exactly. People who complain about the combat didn’t even bother to understand what it was doing. It’s not ATB spam, it’s a real-time puzzle where you’re constantly adapting to buffs/debuffs, stagger windows, and enemy phases. Once you're in the zone, it's like running a perfect routine. Peak flow state. The paradigm system is unironically one of the most fun parts of XIII when used properly.

I do remember him, I was eager to kill him. He isn't top tier villain, but he is just fine, probably just bellow Seymour. Worst FF villains would probably still be Xande and Cloud of Darkness (everything wrong with the trope of last twist final boss in JRPGs), but they still get a pass for being just the third game in the series (though still a downgrade to Garland and The Emperor). Wise and Nero are the embodiment of everything people made fun of VII for years without playing the actual main game (I also can't decide if Hojo came better or worst as a villain through dirge, as everything wrong with him in that game, isn't entirely on him). Other Villain that got hit badly by the "plot twist" syndrome of early games is probably Ultimecia. Great design, but by the time she is introduce, you were already invested on Edea, and her over all plan and (lack) of motives gets lost on the most convoluted aspects of VIII's story. Fan theories and head canons won't change that.
