Xbox Live from 2006-2012 was really something special and I don't think something like that will ever happen again. It was so good, people were able to put up with bullshit like the RRoD and needing to buy extra accessories so that your console worked properly (hard drive, wifi adapter, rechargeable batteries, etc.)

PlayStation got off to a very slow start and was overtly expensive, but after they released the slim version and dropped the price, it became the console you needed to get for awesome single-player story-driven experiences. Plus the online was free, although Xbox Live blew it out of the water

Everyone and their stepfather had a Wii. And EVERYONE loved playing it, contrary to what /v/ might tell you. Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Wii Sports, etc. And you could play online for free as well. I played quite a lot of Mario Kart Wii and Pokemon Battle Revolution online.

They were all great consoles.

wii was fun to play with groups of friends during parties, while the ps3 had psn and you could sign into your friends account and download/install their games. 360 wasn't super distinct, but it did reinforce multiplayer gaming and voice lobbies. that shit was fun.

The Xbox 360 was really good at first which was unexpected, everyone was waiting for the PS3, then the Xbox 360 turned out to be really good and also cheaper. They went full retarded with the project natal shit trying to get the wii audience and never recovered.
The PS3 was worse than the 360 until the very end of the generation, the console itself wasn't that bad but it barely had good exclusives and non exclusives were always better on xbox, I kept hearing the ps3 was more powerful but the cell cpu was a bitch, but I don't know
I hated the WIi, I despise that console. I even had the wiikey chip thing, and installed cfw later, still couldn't bring myself to play that crap. I think the only 2 games I finished were twilight princess and metroid prime 3. I remember not being able to play brawl because it was a double layer dvd or some shit and my wii couldn't read it (my wii wasn't modified back then, it was a problem with the console) and it was the game I was the most excited for in my whole life I think

It was a fun gen though

Everyone made fun of the Wii, it was a wagglan system for babies or old people that only used it for Wii Sports. The PS3 was seen as overpriced and joked about as being a glorified movie player and the Xbox 360 legitimately was seen as the gamers choice until the Kinect happened.

The games themselves were...there. It was the start of people playing online games like Modern Warfare 2 and Halo all the time instead of buying a lot of different games.

They basically clustered a thousand PS3s together to make a cheap-ass supercomputer because Sony left the OtherOS feature in early systems, which let you install Linux. The Air Force used them for sim work and image processing, but it got patched out later with firmware updates, causing a whole lawsuit (remember Geohot?). Absolute kino that Uncle Sam used a gaming console to run black ops spreadsheets.

Never owned Xbox but the Wii was peak. Mogged the other systems in terms of library with a way less powerful system and couldn't even do HD.

PS3 took ages to boot and hardly had any decent games. Way too many movie games and inferior sequels. All the cool third and first party stuff from PS2 was just gone. Last console I bought and I won't ever buy one again.

PS3 sucked for a long time and was only redeemed because it has such a long lifespan. its launch lineup was unremarkable and the console itself was more expensive than it was worth, and this was only compounded by the fact that despite making later models cheaper they removed core features like the ability to run linux and backwards compatibility. I guess you really can't have everything.

the games in question from 3rd parties varied in quality, but the PS2 still had much more variety, probably because budgets hadn't bloated as much and expectations weren't as high. This gen had some memorable titles, such as

E3 was still a thing back then, and the industry was still in this awkward transitory phase where they were trying to maintain the niche audience of weirdos that liked gaming while also appeal to a wider demographic, and thanks to the wii and wii u we saw an explosion of normalfags who took an interest in games like never before.

it's bittersweet when you think about it. it was bad and there was a lot to complain about, but it wasn't all bad and if you strain you can whip up some nostalgia for it.

The Wii and DS brought in a ridiculous influx of casual retards and women but so did Guitar Hero/Rock Band. That gen basically cemented companies trying to turn the people that bought consoles for shit like Wii Sports or Guitar Hero into people that would purchase their other games too and that's still ruining the vidya market today.

Shittest DMC other than 2. Nero sucks arse even in 5 and Dante's movelist feels unfinished. Dante doesn't even get his own levels even though there are only 4 levels for him.

Everyone tried to expand their market with luring non existing customers which means existing ones were neglected and disinterested and now companies either try to change course or sunk cost fallacy keep going, in both cases its not working, most AAA games are costing hundreds of millions while making back pennies and in order to pay for those losses they are trying to increase the price of the games they release after the fact everyone already walked away

A lot of good and a lot of bad as anons pointed out. To me, it was the crossroads for where gaming was going to go. At the time, you could see where it could be great but you could also see where it could all go so wrong.

Had all the games until Kinect caused M$ to go full retard. Was basically THE console until that point, even with paid online and RRoD. Base model was honestly a scam in hindsight with players needing to pay extra for wireless controllers, a hard drive, a WiFi adapter etc that would quickly make it cost almost as much as a PS3. Slim revision came with all of this built in and solved RRoD, but by that point the exclusive line-up had died out. Strong multiplat performance and imho a good batch of exclusives (I still prefer it to the PS3 which is now controversial). Also had limited backwards compatibility with the Xbox, around half of the Xbox's games work on the 360 albeit often with some quirks.

Basically a blu-ray player with a disappointing line up for years. Much coping about how Haze/Resistance/Killzone would kill Halo, or how the POWER OF THE CELL was just around the corner. Only bought by richfags and people who didn't do their research but had a PS2. After the Slim revision and RRoD it started becoming the standard console, although being unable to play PS1/PS2 games was disappointing. Free online, Xbox going full retard and multiplats finally reaching parity around 2009/2010 helped. The controller was for tiny babby hands and the 3rd party versions lacked Sixaxis (another HOIPE feature) so they didn't work with most exclusives released early in the console's lifespan. Also FUCK game installs (took like an hour to play RDR1 or GT5)

Great for casuals and kids, not great for everyone else. Basically relegated to being a secondary console and/or glorified toy after the first Christmas experience of the whole family playing Wii Sports together. Actually a decent console in the end, but WAGGLE controls and weak hardware meant it did not have the multiplats that everyone was talking about (e.g. CoD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed etc). Sold a lot of systems causing it's library to have an abundance of shovelware.
