Digital 'playspace' already mostly owned by bi-yearly COD's, Fortnite, and then shit like Roblox and VRChat for user created content so your end user playercount's always going to be lower then desired.
On top of all of this MMO's have splintered off so hard where the only pitches investors will fund given the last two points are either 'online' single player experiences with a few multiplayer elements sprinkled in (FF14), or the entire focus has to be on some 'new' large open world gimmick.
MMO's as an entire concept got put out to pasture a long time ago, and what's left is chances are what's all that will be left for quite some time till the current big online gaming circles fuck off for elsewhere.
