Too hard to make. Skyrim was the last open world sandbox with simulated systems working under the hood at all times that was good, because nobody attempts to make Bethesda-style games outside of Bethesda and F4 and Starfield sucked nuts. The Witcher 3 was the last normie-approved AAA open world RPG that had mass appeal. Baldur's Gate 3 if you wanna count isometric CRPGs. Breath of the Wild was the last open world exploration game that wasn't a rushed reheated mess like its direct sequel.

The only alternative you have is the modern Ass Creeds, which is no choice at all. That's why people are still modding and playing Skyrim daily, 14 years after its release.

if we had old standards for games but with modern hardware we could have grand adventures

Gotta say it sucks that all the modern adventures are MMOs or Gachas. That gaming as a service a decade ago has ruined things for probably the rest of my life. Maybe my kids will get to see something cool again. Or maybe I'll get one more chance in the retirement home if some wild SAO shit happens soon.

There isn't an argument, everyone knows skyrim was the last best adventure game. But after several thousand mods, several thousand times, it does get old.
At some point gotta move on.
The question is, to what? There is nothing, except Oblivion.
It's been 40 years. Can't one other studio make something to fill the void that isn't always online bullshit?

Adventure games don't exist, you explore the world's and enjoy them but you're never going on an adventure. An adventure takes time, effect and the boring shit is tolerable by the fact that you're physically on an adventure, you lose that illusion when there's a low moment you can simply play a different game. The ability to quit at any moment takes the adventure out.
