It's like 7 card stud but you have 13 cards and the hands are 13 cards long and have bet multipliers. And also you keep drawing cards.
Basically, it's nothing like 7 card stud.

3+3+3+3+2=win
3 can be 3 of a kind or a sequence like 123, 345, 678, etc and have to be the same suit.

You can only hold 13 tiles, meaning you can't hold onto a win when you draw the 14th tile.
And if you throw it away, you can't win later at all unless you change you winning tile(s).

Pon>taking someone else's tile to finish a 3 of a kind (has priority over Chii)
Chii>taking the person to your left's tile to finish a sequence
Kan>You turn a 3 of a kind into a 4 of a kind and reveal a tile in the Indicator wall, which shows you 1 tile nobody can draw and also tells you "the next tile in sequence is worth extra points" This counts as a 3 of a kind for winning purposes.
Kita>(3-player only, turns a North into points and draws a new tile)
Riichii>You are claiming you can win with 1 more tile and you have no called anyone else's tiles (a Kan with 4 from in-hand is safe for Riichii), this is the most common win condition

In order to actually win, you have to meet one of many "win conditions."
There are other rules building on this, but that's the core.

Choosing not to win off of someone else is a different action.

It's such a nuanced rule that it's really not worth bringing up when listing off the extreme fundamentals to someone like this. You're making it sound way worse than it actually is, especially since it just means you can't call ron and not that you "can't win at all"

if you need an explainer game I'd look for a newer release, so many of them (including modern online ones) either assume you already know the rules or were for old consoles and it was cheaper to put the rules in the manual. Maybe the switch board game collection has an explanation.

I learned the basics of riichi mahjong by playing 51 Clubhouse Games on Switch. >Teaches you the basic flow of the game
>There's a menu to check the different yaku as well as the recommended yaku to aim for with your current hand
>Option for the tiles to have the number in the corner to help with reading the manzu characters etc.
>Shows your waits when discarding to enter tenpai
>Playing against CPUs means you can take your time to make decisions

The only thing I didn't pick up and had to learn myself was the fact that taking discards opens your hand and prevents certain yaku from being valid

right, opening the hand. Closed is harder and thus more valuable. The other thing newbies will struggle with forever (more for your replied to anon than you) is furiten, aka if you discard a tile, you can't win off of that tile later. Like if you discard a white dragon and then later you have all but one white dragon needed to win, you are furiten and you can't win. Newbies will fuck this up for a long time, but don't sweat it. It's a tricky thing to get used to.

The two anime online clients with english language (Mahjong Soul and Riichi City) both have decent tutorial. And you can always play with CPU to learn the basics until you're ready.
RC even has a dualingo-like mode to learn yaku, find winning tiles, count points, etc.
Anonymous No.719104000
>>719103118
Likely: Translation error using the wrong reading of 北, then once they got the UI graphics done, it was too late to fix it. And Riichi City only came to exist to cash in on Mahjong Soul audience, so they copied the terminology, mistakes and all.

Wrong, here is the answer.
If we assume 333p is a triplet and 55p a pair, we can have 333 55 456 789 and 78 waiting on 6 and 9
Or we can have 333 55 789 789 and 45 waiting on 3 and 6
If we assume 555p is a triplet and 33p a pair we can have 33 555 678 789 and 34 waiting on 2 and 5
Or we can have 333 555 678 789 and 4 waiting on 4 to complete a pair
