Modern Pokemon mostly feel like a mass of random shapes to me, you can't tell body party from decoration, you can't imagine what sort of texture they would have, if they'd be heavy or light, if they'd be dry or full of fluid, just big blobs of random inorganic plastic

There's still tons of kids into it but they experience it through Roblox and Minecraft pixelmon because families can't all afford a console now.
Oh and of course, Pokemon as a franchise is way, way more focused on mobile games than console games now so there are plenty of kids playing those.

I think most of the bug lines have great designs, even the Gen 3 Lovebugs are okay, shit to use but neat motif on the double battle themes. I think Fire/Fighting fatigue is justified, Wrestling Cat should've been it.

I boil it down to two reasons
a) They already made most Pokemon that are just monster-fied versions of regular animals/insects with Toriyama eyes/brows. So new designs are more about a theme (ie Soccer star rabbit) instead of believable natural organisms
b) The newer simplistic colorful rounded designs are much better for merchandising

there's some good designs in modern Pokemon, but i do feel gen 8 and 9 are by far some of the weakest.
they kinda remind me of some of the unfinished beta designs that pop up now and again. like there's something missing to really make the designs to look good.

Modern Pokemon are designed with a shape suitable for making plush toys for little girls in mind. That why 95% of 3D era Pokemon are rancid shit. In old gens there might be three Pokemon per dex like that, wigglytuff, clefable, Chansey, but in new games the whole dex is a moeblob, and they even more simplistic those three I just mentioned.

pointing something out genuinely rather than falling in gen warring, gen 1 designs were being figured out for a long time and after already being in the game, just edited over themselves and redrawn as sprites, whereas modern pokemon designs get fully determined before even being modelled. among other things, that makes it a difference in terms of why scyther is kind of a generic idea of a mantis whereas lurantis is a specific mantis- lurantis had the time to be designed with the specific concept in mind, scyther was a dinosaur they were vaguely gluing mantis parts onto until they felt happy

at some point pokemon designs stopped trying to be creatures that made sense as just one of many others in a species, vs. individual characters with implied personalities and even professions

i imagine this got worse as the series went on due to the fact that the more pokemon there are, the harder it becomes to make something that stands out from the existing mons without exaggerating things or going really hard into a very specific theme to avoid overlap

pokemon would be much better off if the regional variant concept had arisen much earlier in the series's history and been used more, allowing them to embrace thematic overlap between mons instead of having to dance around it

It's literally the worst gen to say it's for plushies of when it comes to the 3D gens, the one right after was roundified in spades because they often make even numbered gens like that. Gen 7 had all manner of points and awkward limbs, mons that folded up in ways impossible to translate to plush form properly like the Tapus aside from Koko, etc.
