Nah, they just got conveniently mindfucked by a drawback of the GF system that’s actually pretty interesting though it’s never brought up again. The orphanage serves as a contrivance to give the characters a deeper link to one another.

the fact that using GF only removed memories that enable a plot twist that ultimately doesn't matter at all unless you're japanese and place autistic value in characters being childhood friends and literally nothing else so squall never realized there was big gaps in his memory is extremely contrived but ultimately harmless.

where it gets really fucking corny is that somehow irvine just never says anything either on purpose or as a passing comment that lets it slip, even though he didn't lose his memories is where it goes full on nonsense because it goes against the character he's otherwise written to be.

No. The amnesia thing is a little dumb but the plot point in general has basically zero effect on the actual story. You could cut it out completely with no other changes and no one would notice.

Squall doesn't whine, he's just a nervous insecure wreck like all of us. From the outside observer he's a cool, calm, calculated individual who makes decisions at key moments. To us the viewer who are privy to his internal monologue, we know that he's actually pic related. He's a teenager with serious trust issues after a bad childhood experience who has a massive amount of responsibility thrust upon him and he's barely keeping it together.

FF8 is a brainlet filter. People who come out of it thinking Squall is emo have video game character frame of references and don't understand how real people think and act.

I have never watched a single youtuber essay about a game in my life let alone know what the fuck ecelebs talk about, but I can honestly say I feel nothing for the FF8 cast. They are generally unengaging with very few exceptions.
Rinoa brings the overall group IQ down on top of that.

Disc 1 Squall is the best, yeah. Disc 2 shows a immediate change in personality where he is suddenly lonely and love starved and hates responsibilities. In disc 1 he took every job or opportunity offered him and did his best without stupid inner monolog

if FFVIII was made on the PS2 and was able to fit everything they wanted, it would be the greatest game of all time.
