Must play RTS games? I haven't played a single RTS game, but always wanted to check out the genre. What does /v/ recommend?

Probably CnC Generals

Yeah, Red Alert 1 and 2 are good starts. So is C&C Generals. If you like RA, you can also check out the Command & Conquer series, like Tiberium Sun.
Age of Empires 2 is great, 4 is a modern title that you may also enjoy.
Dawn of War 1 just got a definitive edition. It's one of the most well-loved rts from that era. Dawn of War 2 is also a great game.
Warcraft 3, absolute classic.
Rise of Nations and Rise of Legens are also worth checking out.
Battle Realms and Warlords Battlecry series are some personal favorites.

dawn of war 1, age of empires 2, company of heroes, steel division/WARNO, homeworld, command and conquer is a decent variety so you can figure out what specific type you like the most.

Since you started with a C&C pic I'm gonna have to rec C&C and the sequel Tiberian Sun. I like these old RTS games as the game design is very different to what the genre became. C&C is more puzzle like and Tiberian Sun is more base building focused, these as opposed to micro skill tests. With RA2 the design started to be more recognisable as a modern RTS.

Age of Empires 2 is very fun, looking at the store page I thought I wouldn't enjoy it all that much but there's a lot of fun tiny mechanics and it's got a good tutorial

C&C series. They are the simplest to play and get into. The series get progressively more complicated mechanics-wise as entries come after one and another. Games like AoE 2 on the other hand might overwhelm you with their mechanical complexity if you have 0 experience with the genre.

Skip C&C 1 and Red Alert 1. They might have been iconic games in their own time, but the gameplay is extremely primitive and aged very poorly. The same goes for Tiberian Sun, but that game has such an amazing atmosphere that you should try it nonetheless, playing through the campaigns for both GDI and Nod, and the Firestorm missions as well. Red Alert 2 is the first of the series with gameplay that is agelessly fun. It also has amazing missions and a wonky expansion in the form of Yuri's Revenge. Don't listen to tards saying that you should play Mental Omega. It's huge content-wise, but it's extremely anti-fun. C&C Renegade is not an RTS but it is an FPS, playing out during the events of C&C1. It is an old, primitive shooter, but it is fun, try it. C&C Generals and Zero Hour can be hard to run on modern Windows, but if you can get them to run, play them. Get Shockwave mod too, for fun (if everything is broken balance-wise, nothing is: The Mod). Get Rise of the Reds mod for more serious gameplay. Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3 are OK games. But definetaly skip C&C4, it's an abomination.

What the fuck was Westwood smoking? Even Warcraft 1 dungeon missions let you see ahead of your guys.

If you want to try something different you could try Aliens: Dark Descent. It's more of a tactics game than a strategy game.

They have a hard on for low visibility, maybe as a tradeoff for no receding fog of war. They never changed it even in the later games.

Songs like this play in the background while you "real-time" your "strategy" against pre-determined AI groups.

To add onto to CnC3, you should play Kane's Wrath as a kind of "This is what we would've done the first time around had we had the time for it" kind of game before EA finally put the last bullet into Westwood and killed them. It's got subfactions, it's got a new campaign, a Risk style global domination game mode. It's all the things I'd imagine Westwood would've done from the start had EA not tried to rush them with CnC 3.

Aoe 2, CnC Red Alert 2, Warcraft 3+exp are the big 3 and what most people recommend. All RTS games are basically variations of these 3 in terms of execution.
Modern RTS falls down to Company of Heroes+ Dawn of War if you think Base Building belongs in RTS. Total War if you just wanna play a big ass army sim.

Age of Mythology: Retold is, unironically, a good and accessible version of my favorite RTS game, Age of Mythology.

Here's what you do:
>create a lobby with a password
>invite your best 2 or 3 friends
>team up together
>create a team of level 2 AIs to play against you (they're pretty piss easy and will barely even attack you)
>choose your gods at random
>poke around until you've figured the game out
>start a new game but with progressively harder CPUs until you find your group's sweet spot
>have fun stomping the CPUs

I've been playing AoM for 22 years. My 2 buddies and I play a few times a year, on a team of us vs Titan CPUs and have a good time. It's pure ludo :)

Set villagers on autobuild btw you basically always want more villagers

Tempest Rising was a fairly unabashed "inspiration" from Command and Conquer down to the hotkeys and controls being a near 1 to 1 copy. You've got your not GDI fighting the pseudo Brotherhood of Nod as they both want a fancy red plant that's used as a resource for all kinds of technology as well as power source. It's fine, but it plays and looks so similar to CnC that it had me reinstalling those games instead. Good recreation though.

this genre has too many flaws to count
short version: it's simply not fun beyond casual messing around versus ai which already peaked with sc2, dow1 etc.

Allow me to introduce you to the most overlooked RTS of all time Eternally overshadowed by Warcraft 3 which was released around the same time which was a great game in it's own right but you will find that this one has many unique mechanics that have not yet been replicated to my knowledge

WTF were they thinking? Thank God for INI modding. Anyway, let's give some love for remixes, too. Some are good.

The AI can be exploited by aggro lock, I think that's how you can get past parts like this. Hit them with a rocket and lure them into your minigunners. This tech is required to beat the dino missions.

I've always wanted to play this since the old days. There's a "Zen Edition" on steam but I'm always cautious with these because devs always fuck up what was once a good game.
Which version should I play?

Try Imperium Galactica 2: Alliances. An absolute gem from Hungary, 1999. A hybrid grand strategy / real time strategy game set in space and planets. It looks surprisingly good for a game from 99, full 3d graphics and all and it has a miryad of mechanics that are easy to learn but hard to master.
>terraforming, colonization, colony building on planets
>ground combat on planets
>fleet combat in space in which planetary defenses and orbiting space stations can take part if they are nearby
>espionage, sabotage, terrorism
>trade of military surplus via markets
>research with various branches
>a very extensive diplomacy system that allows you to do negotiate about pretty much anything
>you can design your own tanks and ship classes using modules you research or even steal via espionage from other races

There are also 3 campaigns for the 3 major races, which consist of a major plotline and numerous randomly generated encounters and sidequests for great replayability. The campaigns also have exclusive mechanics in them, such as pandemics, mafia takeovers of planets, threats of apocalyptic meteor storms, and more.

Besides the major campaigns, there are also dozens of simpler scenarios with just one major objective, and their own settings and quirks, and of course, a skirmish mode.

>Instead of unit production buildings every unit spawns as a peasant (automatic, speed up spawn by building more huts)
>Train them in any of the 3 "barracks" to make a different unit, which ones? different. All 3? again different
>There's horses on the map you can tame, you can put (almost) any unit on a horse
>Towers are also, put any unit in them
>Can light buildings on fire, peasants need to carry water to extinguish them
>Woods are great for making an ambush but running through the woods scares the birds revealing your location
>Special resource you only get from doing combat buys hero units that have unique abilities
>Each different unit can also learn abilities and strategy is not simply max out tier 3's because they all have their own uses and strength and weaknesses
>4 very distinct factions with different play styles
>Comfy aesthetics
>One of the original devs made his life work to update and re-release it for Steam to run on current year hardware
Idk what else to tell you man it's good shit all around

Also I tried playing C&C 1 and I just found it way too difficult. Not sure if I’m just a retard but it doesn’t seem good for someone new to RTS
