You have to understand that most Tolkien/D&D style fantasy tropes in Japan come not from the afformentioned literature, but from games derived from said media such as video games like Ultima/Wizardry and serialized D&D campaigns like Record of Lodoss War. The latter of which is what shaped the idea of what an elf is in Japan

I think High Elves need to be drop dead gorgeous tall and moderately lean "perfect facial features" Scandinavians, and Dark Elves are just that but black hair and dark skin + fatter.
Wood Elves should be human sized and a lil alien looking. Larger eyes, extra lithe, uniquely colored sclera/iris.
