Harmony of Dissonance literally has no bosses aside from Maxim. Every single other is so easy you don't even have to move to defeat them - just sit in the corner and whip their ass that just moves forward slowly. I find it hard to imagine a worse CV game solely based on that, and mind you, this garbage has much more issues than that alone, which is no wonder since con artist Iga directed it.

The level design is awful and the combat is beyond fucking mindless despite the game being so proud of it that it traps you in rooms until you contend with it between the empty useless hallways. The shittiness of LoI's level design does not compare to any of the 2D games. Its only contender for The Igarashi Shitfest Award for Most Soporific is Curse of Darkness. I wouldn't say it has anything that holds it back in a "major" way. It has flaws, but I don't think it's hard to see why for someone it might be their favorite. It retains the classic controls but without indulging in gimmicks and is an extremely consistent set of levels. CV2 is the weakest and this is including the three kinda shitty GameBoy titles. Barely any of its concepts are done well and most of them clash with one another.
The original CV has overall very basic mechanics, but strong level design that utilize those mechanics really well. That's pretty much the CV identity.
Simon's Quest, while ambitious, made a mistake by attempting to fit that same simplistic gameplay into a world that is not suited for it.
Non-linear Castlevania does not work with the Classicvania's restricted mechanics, since it requires very deliberate level design to stay engaging.
This is the core failing of the game and would have been enough to label it a failure, but there are multiple other problems on top, which really drags it down. Mansion's could have been a great opportunity to switch to a more structured, focused and unique challenge, but they are almost all far too braindead to add anything to the game. Not to mention the mind numbing visuals.
Bosses infamously don't even seem finished, which makes the emptiness of the final dungeon suspect, rather than being a really cool attempt to build up tension before the final boss.

The others may be mid, but CV2 is bad.

it's not nostalgia either. I played it literally like 3 months ago, and it's better than the first, but worse than 3.

Simon's Quest tried to innovate the series before it fully established an identity, and turns out it made some missteps along the way. The localization was botched, difficulty was all over the place, and western audiences were screwed over because the NES release was just a worse port of the Famicom release. But it still had impact

People go on to glaze games like SOTN and the other metroidvanias that game after, but SOTN would literally not exist if it weren't for Simon's Quest.

Dracula is by far cv1's hardest and most bullshit boss aside from the fact that you get an infinite respawn right in front of him. Death is really easy with cross or holy water.

He isn't for me. I guess I just got the timing down.

I know. What's why I said above the only thing you really need to remember in CV1 is to keep the holy water for Death.

it's not the timing.... it's the fact that he spawns right the fuck in front of you and you have like a quarter of a second to react and move out of the way

I always had trouble with this as well. It could be that it's always reactable and my reaction time is just garbage, but a lot of my phase 1 attempts felt like they were up to luck.

probably input lag if you weren't playing on a CRT, it's genuinely pretty close to limit of human reaction for many people with some of his spawns, even on CRT. That's why it's bullshit.

I first beat it on the GBA version, so maybe there was some fuckery with the port? Either way, that shit kinda sucks in what's otherwise a really good game.

I'll be honest since I didn't want to look up how the game worked I didn't know crouching made him high jump. You can loop Drac phase 2 with just 2 holy water. When trying to figure out how to no hit the game I decided to farm a shot upgrade off of phase 1's fire balls instead of learning how to dodge phase 2. I might be retarded making it harder but I got a no hit clear so fuck it.
