Act 3 is terrible. Time Travel but retarded, like usual. 7 is better in that regard. They made it a prequel to a prequel. It has no identity. Any other Dragon Quest is better. Even 1 and 2.

Beautiful looking game, amazing level design (in the towns at least). Traditional combat with just enough new features....

However the music is terrible, the localization is atrocious, the writing and characters are paper thing and the game drags on. Get it? "Drag-On Quest" haha.... seriously though it's fucking relentlessly dull.

I thoroughly enjoyed most of what I played, but I dropped it when it reused the snow section in act 3. I hated the premise for act 3. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of character development in act 2 only for the setup for act 3 to completely nullify it.

One little thing about it I loved was its presence of pre-rendered story cutscenes, took me back. Especially the events that set up act 2.

I thought it was pretty well done. Act 2 is a subversion of the usual "happy ending" JRPG tropes, but Act 3 shows you how things could have played out instead. They also play around a bit with the protagonist being overleveled, including a boss fight designed around that idea.

It has that real adventure feel to it. The world is very varied, giving each location its distinct flavor and the characters are endearing. Combat is classic turn based with decent room to strategize, buffs and debuffs actually matter here. Overall just a really polished rpg experience.

I'm actually playing this right now, I have never played a DQ game before this, but honestly the game is pretty damn good. The 2D sections in Tickington suck ass though, they're very tedious, slow, and annoying to keep tabs on your character's status and whatnot that the 3D mode easily lets you see.

It's the most linear Dragon Quest, zero exploration and the dungeons were also linear except the final area. 8 is more of an adventure even with the massive empty world that only had chests and recruitable monsters.

act 3 is bad, story altogether feels like safe japanese writing (read: not good) that can't make up its behind whether it wants to be cute or serious.

like the other anon mentioned, the characters just all felt so thin and while the story does have points where it picks up if something big is happening, the rest just feels like wondering around for ages.

If this is your first Dragon Quest game then don’t even bother with Tickington, all the levels are from previous Dragon Quest games so the whole segment is just fan service. The original version of the game didn’t even have it, it’s only a thing in the 3DS and definitive edition versions

DQ is a series that nobody actually likes is a thing you'll learn if you ever actually play them or go to the threads.
Nobody "discusses" Dragon Quest, it's often waifuposting and little else. The gameplay? It's nothing, it's brain dead JRPG stuff where you just press attack, maybe heal or buff every other boss, and you don't think about it too hard.
Surely the story is the draw then, right? Nope, these games don't really have any story worth writing home about. Characters? Same shit, the characters are mostly just designs with archetypes and no real development.
Antagonists? This is a series that has been going for 40 years, and only one antagonist is all that memorable, and even then, that's half because he looks like Sephiroth.

It's a complete shitshow of a franchise, and DQ11 is no different. You're better off playing, I dunno, Trails or Final Fantasy.

I and II are awful. III is the quintessential DQ game. IV and VI are good, but not really noteworthy. VII and VIII are great, but not the greatest. V has the best story, IX has the best gameplay, and XI is the 2nd best in both categories.

X is a Japanese MMO and also the only DQ mainline game I've never played.

Better than VIII in every way except for the OST, but, again, it didn't do anything new for the genre unlike the first 5 games in the series.

One thing I can say is that I hope the 3DS version gets a translation patch soon because it oozes SOUL.

I genuinely don't believe Sugiyama composed it and think he was already dead, but his family and close coworkers kept the charade going for financial purposes.
