The whole point of these controllers is to replicate the "retro" experience. No non-N64 game uses this button layout and so this controller's use is limited outside of emulating 64 games. In that case, why half-ass the experience? Go all the way and replicate the whole fucking controller.

I don't know it was the early days of 3D, even if Nintendo had thought about putting a second analog it would have been prohibitively expensive given the mechanism with the optical sensor. It was very smart of them to think about the camera at all and how the player can control it in a 3D environment and the C-buttons are a simple and elegant solution to that.
Just compare to what the competition was doing, the trident was miles ahead.

It just looks uncomfortable/weird so that's what people experience, despite having decent ergonomics. I do think the grips are a bit too narrow, but that's about the only real problem. The N64 controller is perfectly comfortable.

People say the same thing about the Dreamcast controller, because it has pointy grips (which literally have no impact on holding it) but people still perceive it as uncomfortable because it looks unconventional.

All that being said the modern controller design was perfected by MS who spent assloads of money creating the 360 controller perfected ergonomics.

I don't like the bumpers and triggers on the Xbox controller, I get cramps over extended periods of time. I find the DS4 much more comfortable, I also prefer the symmetrical stick placement, you can even use claw grip to use the d-pad to switch weapons or something while moving.

It's fine but there's no N64 adapter, kinda defeats the purpose of having something like this. 8bitdo has a bad habit of making retro controllers but only making them compatible with PC, phones, and the Switch. Sometimes you get ones like the M30 where they have a Genesis adapter but not a Saturn one, despite there being a Saturn-colored M30.

And stick placement is just a preference. I do think the Playstation layout is best for 2D games. Xbox layout is better for racing games and 3D action and platformers.

DS1 was great for its time, there was an attempt at ergonomics and the fact that the design lasted for so long is a testimony to how good it was. The issue is that they went with it again for the PS3 with no changes whatsoever besides adding analog triggers while Nintendo and Microsoft were hard at work perfecting their controllers. And yes the Wiimote is a piece of shit in retrospect but it was revolutionary at the time.

This controller is shit for n64 games and single analog games in general. Notice in >>719120124 the position of the thumb when holding the stick. It is vertical, straight up and down. A modern shell like OPs will have thumb positioned diagonally which is both less ergonomic and worse for fine control. The modern shell design is made with two analog sticks in mind not one. Take other single analog systems for example like the Saturn and Dreamcast: their shells are also designed so that your thumb will be vertical rather than diagonal when using the stick.

Ackshually, it looks like the same shell as the 8bitdo Ultimate 2, which has more vertical style grips like the Steam Deck.

The operative word there is "more", as in not fully, vertical. Compare that controller to the back of the dreamcast and you'll see just how vertical the ideal is for single analog. On a separate note the ergonomics of Wii Nunchuck controller is heavily based on the center prong of the N64 controller.

I finished restoring an OG with a Renaissance 64 kit and its fucking great, there is literally no replacement for this controller for a proper N64 experience
