You pick speed, tech or power ala rock paper scissors. Each monster has an attack preference and a secondary choice when enraged or such, which is most of the difficulty complaints for the story
But there are skills that are neutral to RPS so you can't clash and post story mega bosses are all about team building to mitigating those deadly attacks
Also you build up meter to do an ult with soulful animations

ill just ask this here instead instead of making a separate thread: how is frontier these days? i've been turned off by the fact that it's an MMO, but I hear servers like frontier are rebalanced to make the grind comparable to mainline games. how is rain server specifically?

The games are really short if you don't grind, you can pass the story with an overleveled starter like pokemon, the difficulty spikes when you reach High Rank aka the postgame

Stories 2 is a huge upgrade over 1 btw

Its really fucking good. Low rank and High basically play themselves but thats pretty standard for EOL MMOs, endgame is better than GenU IMO. Also try out screen translation for flavor text/inconsequential NPC dialog and lossless scaling to crank the frames as high as your monitor can handle.

MHS1 is too RNG-heavy.
I liked MHS2 after they removed Denuvo though.

I hope MHS3 keeps the ability to change a monster color, they must have realized people actually liked that, they used to promote the MHS1 remaster.
