That was for the Wii Classic Controller Pro. However, they kinda fucked up the shoulder buttons. They made the L/R into the smaller buttons and ZL/ZR were turned into "triggers," but in doing so removed the actual trigger function since no games actually took analog ZL/ZR inputs. This change carried over to the Wii U, Switch, and now Switch 2. That's why there's no analog triggers anymore.

So you'd use the left prong when you play in 2D and use the middle prong when you play in 3D. Wavedashing also wasn't something that the controls were necessarily designed around (even if leaving it in was intended) and Melee autists use modified controllers and fightsticks because they are effectively not playing the melee for which the controller layout was conceived, so it's normal that a different controller may be more suited.

The distance between the buttons being more than twice as big means it takes twice as long to get from one to the other and you're losing frames there is a huge fucking A button directly in between the y and b button as well as the x and b button so you can't consistently slide without risking misinputs. In a diamond face button layout your thumb joint sits on the bottom button and the tip of your thumb sits on left button and you move your thumb so that the joint is sitting on right button and the tip is sitting on the top button. I sometimes forget that I'm talking to complete incompetents who can't even hold a controller correctly and need it explained to them like they're a child. When you slide from top to bottom or left to right button you slide your thumb through the empty fucking middle because there's no giant A button there to get in your way. Novel concept I know.

Your thumb is is covering the entire area anyway unless you have tiny hands.

You can just roll your thumb if you want to hit B and Y at the same time, the A button isn't actually in between those two buttons, so there is no obstacle if you move your thumb slightly off-line with the A button.

If you slide from Circle to Square you still need slide your thumb over Cross, just like you'd need to slide your thumb over A when going from B to X.

On a GC Controller I can easily press
AB, AX, and XY with one thumb. With a bit more effort I can press BY with one thumb. The only combination I have to claw for is BX.
On a Playstation controller, I have to claw for Triangle + X, and Square + Circle.
Clawing for Triangle + X is massively uncomfortable and pressing X on a PS controller is more uncomfortable than any face button on GC.

I can't decide if I liked the B button as it is or as it was on the prototype controller.

If it were like this it would have still complied with the GC controller's design language (that each button can be recognized by feel) but would have also been more substantial to press as well.

Did any game use the click triggers? I heard some theoretical applications for it (such as using the trigger as a throttle in a racing game then clicking it in to activate a turbo) but I don't recall any game that had a specific function assigned to that.
