Demon's Souls' Red Dragon in Boletaria was such a vastly superior implementation of the concept.
>you see the dragon in the intro of Boletaria
>when you step on a bridge filled with enemies you can hear it long, before you can see it
>oh fuck, it's actually a dragon
>naturally you try the other way, because maybe you are not supposed to cross the bridge yet
>you can see a blue dragon and the red dragon already flapping it's wings to return
>you can also see burnt corpses and items lying all around
>players, who like to explore, naturally try to hatch up a plan to get the items in the time it takes for the red dragon to fly back and forth
>in the end the dragon guarding this single bridge (like in Dark Souls) was just a prelude
>because it turns out the Boletarian Castle you have been exploring up to now was just the first bullwark and is connected by a long bridge with watch tower to the real Castle
>you have to run across the bridge, while the red dragon hunts you relentlessy and spews fire on the bridge segment you are on
I played Demon's Souls first and expected the Bridge Wyvern to be a similar threat and maybe show up later again just like in Boletaria. Instead I just came back to it and btfoed, while it's fire damage barely scratched me in Havel's armor.

Demon's Souls stands on it's own legs. That's how it was conceived. You are thinking of it wrong.

I don't miss it, because 2025 is the first time in my life actually playing these games. I am experiencing everything fresh.
