Jonah was a lazy Jew that didn’t want to go to Nineveh so he tried to escape to Spain, but God caught up to him and the sailors freaked out and threw him overboard. Jonah probably was excited to finally be dead, but got trapped in the mouth of a whale for 7 days while God took him back to Nineveh. Jonah probably did a lot of soul searching in there and the story is about understanding that death is around every corner and so feeling at peace with God is important.

He tells God he’s pissed off and God pulls a trick on him by making a tree grow to provide shade, and then when Jonah falls asleep God gets a worm to eat the tree. The Lord Giveth and the Lord Taketh away. This is where the story ends, with Jonah angry, Nineveh saved and God clicking His tongue.

Basically Jonah’s a bitter old Jew that thinks only Jews should be allowed to love god, he’s the anti-Christ (in the sense of begrudgingly giving salvation to people but hating it.)
