This argument is stale.
DKC wasn't just about DK, it was about the new reimagined world he lived in. I hate that the other kongs are reduced to hit points in Retro's DKC games, it's like having Luigi co-op with Mario but you lose Luigi if you take a hit.

>deeper level design than most games, lots of secrets to find and collectables in 2&3
>gameplay variety - speeding through levels, combing them for secrets, or just casually playing all feel different
>animal buddies are fun and cute and a nice change of pace while not being too easy
1 had the best core platforming
3 had too many gimmicks (still a solid game)
2 had the perfect balance

I'd argue 3's strength is in its many gimmicks.
It was a game released after n64 was released. The SNES was basically over and the devs had the context to go wild and as experimental as they could. So they did and released a great game in the process.

I would say DKC2 is just as gimmcky as 3, but people never seem to give it as much shit for it, whatever the reason is.

I think it's the quality of the gimmicks. There's no real stinkers in 2 but there are in 3 like the sewer gas level with reversed controls, the slooow one with low gravity, and I remember the waterfall elephant levels being very slow paced and boring too. Can't really think of bad gimmicks in 2. Maybe the balloons over lava? But they don't overstay their welcome.

played these for the first time this year to get mental prepped for bananza. DKC1 and 2 are truly some of the best 2D platformers ever made. The amount of soul packed into their visuals and soundtracks is nothing short of miraculous. 3 is fine but it definitely doesn't hit those highs

Ostrich is genuinely useless 90% of the time.
And frog has terrible hitboxes. Snake might be slow and looks dumb, but at least his hitboxes make sense.

Yeah David Wise is what made these games even more better than they were. The dude was a magician with music. Days where my mind is empty, his music from DKC will randomly pop in my head it had that much impact.
