Say what you want about old Yakuza games (other than 0 and maybe 7) but at least they felt grand. IW felt like the budget got slashed or some shit, there's not even that many animated cutscenes, it feels like everyone is just standing around in engine.

I literally laughed out loud when Kiryu's handler from Gaiden died and then the sappy kind of happy music from Kiryu's remembrances started playing and Kiryu was like "alright guess that happened"

Couldn't take the story seriously at all.

The final scene with Eiji, forgiving him because he's such a nice guy who only sees the good on people :) really made me sick of Ichiban already, I want that shounen like retard to stop being the protagonist of the games already. At the very least Kiryu's half of the game was there to make up for Ichiban's.

My main point is both 5 and 8 have absolute dogshit, retarded main stories but are only saved by their gameplay and side content, something I wish I could say about Pirates which is just a game i feel nothing about after finishing it, what a let down that was.

Yakuza in general has trouble handling more than one view point and i feel like the 4-5 era were the grimmest for that period.

relegating kiryu meeting with akiyama, date, seeing the orphan kids, and teasing a meeting with haruka and haruto to a side mode was possibly the dumbest shit they could've possibly done, yakuza pirates was such a waste of time, it was fun but literally nothing in that game matters besides the post credits scene

8 had some really high highs and some really low lows. Ichiban's entire post-split section felt like he got relegated to the B team in his own game and Bryce was a shit villain once the mystical elements around him fell away
The stuff with Kiryu's cancer was also all over the place, in some scenes it was handled well and struck a strong emotional chord, in others not at all and detracted from what was going on.
Characters were top notch though, I think I like the new characters in 8 even better than the 7 cast. Counting Seonhee as new because she's actually playable now.

I just don't understand Kiryu's relationship to the Yakuza. Before 0, they treat it as if he wanted nothing to do with the Yakuza and he was dealt an unlucky hand in life. In Zero, it gets recontextualized to where he's only doing this Yakuza shit for Fuma Oyabun. So after the first game, there's no reason why Kiryu keeps coming back to save the Tojo Clan; he should not have forced the Chairman role onto Daigo, and even if he still did, why does he act like it's a nuisance when Daigo asks for help? Then in Infinite Wealth, he goes on a whole fucking tangent about "taking the Yakuza down with him" as if he didn't leave that shit behind in the first game and chose to ignore it in every other game. Realistically, his arc should've ended in 3 when Hamazaki stabs him, and Kiryu realizes not everyone is willing to grow and step away from that lifestyle.

And despite all of this, I still clap and shout whenever he rips off his shirt and Receive You starts playing

The whole point of 8 and that scene is that Ichiban has grown enough that what the fickle crowd thinks doesn't bother him anymore. They're all scared or looking for internet clout, not real threats standing in his way. Those are the people he fights.
He let the Vtuber bullshit in the begging get him down because he didn't understand how people could believe fake news like that. Now he's willing to let it slide off his back to focus on what matters, which surprises the crowd and definitely changes some of their minds.
