I think it's interesting to think how much the Cobra Unit were informed but they probably went on only need-to-know basis except The End who just used tranq darts and wanted to have a final battle before he literally dies anyway. The other members were probably not as much informed, they were just going along the ride and genuinely trying to kill Snake so the Boss' defection is more believable. But if everything went to plan, they were just dragged there to be killed.

I wonder how Snake would have handled The Pain if there wasn't conveniently water to escape any time The Pain tried to do anything. Maybe that place was chosen so Snake would have a chance.

This is not a "theory" it is explicitly stated. The whole point of the virtuous mission was for Snake to serve as a sacrificial lamb. He would be killed by The Boss and further Volgin's confidence in her. That's not how the game frames it at all. Ocelot is full of talent but young, inexperienced and hot-headed. He's likely still the best shot in the franchise outside of Sniper Wolf as his younger self but he keeps trying to impress Snake and getting beat because of it. It's not purely an act he puts on, EVA herself comments that Ocelot ate all of Snake's food when the latter was captured in order to be like him, and him picking up on Snake's CQC is just proof of his growing obsession with Big Boss. There are times where he's purposely messing with him without actually meaning to kill, but those involve guns, where he believes himself to be superior in skill. Hand to hand is where he proves himself and is genuinely trying to one up Snake

You have to remember that the original plan was for the Boss to defect and coordinate with Ocelot to steal the legacy. After Volgin's nuke, their mission changed to: hand the legacy over to Snake and let him kill The Boss and the Cobras. Midwit take is to say that SSBNs or truck launchers are better than the Metal Gear, SSBNs can be followed from the port when they need to rotate crew and resupply food etc. and them tracked by undewater sensors and truck launchers are tied to the large main roads in the country and thus can be easily spotted and tracked by recon satellites.
Metal Gears are much more agile and can go to any terrain so it's easier to avoid detection and tracking, the fear is that Nations are going to lose track of each other's arsenal which will inevitably lead to more tension and more intense nuclear arms race.
