I guess my frustration with the game is that it's changed another traditional, clear-cut, enemy into another misunderstood NPCs that we have to help out. You can't just have simple evil anymore. They were the usual cloaks of the Cetra but the cetra marked the ones infected and buried them along with Jenova.
That's why Shinra are the ones that gives them away, they found them when they unearthed Jenova.

I have more of a problem for them being the explanation of Black Materia rather than the Planet and the rituals of the Cetra having created it, because the Planet is rather neutral.

However concerning the Gi and the other ghosts in the world, I did find it odd that they hadn't dissolved into the Planet. Aliens is a stupid explanation for this in general. However it's also a stupid explanation for it in particular, because the humans are also aliens and they've integrated with the Lifestream just fine.

So, yes, I do have a problem with Gi being aliens. It's just not even in the top fifty of my problems with the Remake. Compared to many it's barely a blip on the radar.

It's been referenced in most VII-related media since X-2. tl;dr, per Nojima: the origin for both human life on Gaia and the process of "Mako energy" was Shinra (the kid from FFX-2) creating the means for space travel by using Vegnagun to turn the farplane into a power source.

The lifestream is a living organism, the cetra are white cells and humans are red cells.
The cetra can "speak" with the hivemind while humans can't.
The Gi and Jenova are outsiders, Jenova is a malicious virus and you can say the Gi are another "blood type". That's why they can't mix.
Ghosts are just spirits that have some sort of trouble merging back with the current. That was a Cetran job, to guide the dead.

And yes, the concept of the Farplane of X and the Lifestream of VII are pretty similar, but they don't share the same universe.

Dirge of Cerberus already canonized an "unknown" lost advanced civilization. Regenesis Organization finds a bunch of superior airships they can't understand, which they fly with. The nods to the connection have been constant since its inception and only reinforced in interviews, never downplayed.

I disregard things for my personal amusement and sense of writing. For VII it means I keep four different and distinct canons. Even the bad ones, when you don't consider them meaningful are fun alternate narratives.

- OGVII alone. Masterpiece
- OGVII + Before Crisis + Last Order + a clarifying interview (+ maybe Maiden who Travels the Planet). Very good.
- OGVII + entire Compilation - LO & MwTtP. Abysmal.
- Remake series + ambiguous chunk of the Compilation. The very worst story in videogames, because meta is the worst storytelling tool you can use and fate is the second worst.
