I recently played both and found them both to be absolute garbage. Turns out 14yo me was much more forgiving with the writing than I am now.

Nah, what happened is that adult you was tricked into thinking that these crpgs were ever about the writing. It's a mistake many people have made which is why modern rpgs think every npc needs to spout off a fucking essay about themselves.
Most old rpgs had just enough story to be immersive and give context to the gameplay without overtaking it.

Maybe you're right, however in my case the gameplay didn't make up for the rest. Still not as bad as pathfinder though. Got it for free on Timmie's store and I still felt robbed.
