Evidently backstory. Michael Zaki gets away with making games where there's nothing but backstory and that's enough to fill thousands of hours of video essays and theorycrafting videos, and also somehow justifies killing absolutely everyone you come across in the game to accomplish some nonsense final goal. He doesn't even need a complete or coherent backstory, there just has to be enough that Vaati can make 30 hours worth of headcanon with it.
