It's bad now, but in my opinion no MMO has good gameplay other than maybe Warframe.

Back in it's peak it was basically the social media of that era for a lot of people.
The gameplay was secondary to the chatbox.

This. People who whine about WoW being “boring” almost always treat it like a single-player game, then cry when they realize it wasn’t made for that. The fun comes from coordinating with friends, cracking jokes in voice chat, and pulling off tight dungeon runs or PvP strats. If you’re playing solo tab-targeting boars in Elwynn Forest with default UI and no addons, then yeah, it’s going to be dull. It’s like hating on Smash Bros because you don’t have anyone to play with locally.
