Fairy type helped Togekiss, it was already falling off by Gen 5 but fairy type gave it enough of a boost to still be decent in Gen 6 and 7
The real problem is that being a slow bulky attacker relying on air slash flinches just can't cut it anymore

It did its job cucking Dragon types but basically just replaced it as a strong generalist type with no significant weaknesses, like Water. It's not quite as bad as Dragon was since the average Fairy isn't as strong and they don't have retard moves like Outrage but good Fairy types are still really fucking good and combinations like Steel/Fairy are insane
Something making Fairy even better than it should be is that it's strong against Dark types which have been stupidly good for years now. They should have never buffed Knock Off, I can't believe they haven't reverted that yet

The only use case I can think of is to get around Imprison in pvp but I don't think anybody running Return is running that as well.
The weakest version of the move has a funny gen 3 animation, though.

People use frustration as a use case for ditto. Most people just max out their pokemons happiness. If your opponent's ditto transforms into your pokemon, it doesn't copy their happiness, so its return will be incredibly weak, but it's frustration would be strong

Nah knock off is right at the sweet spot now before it prevented the pokemon utilizing any items or swaping them after being hit by it which was broken as fuck 65 power is perfect you get a 97 base power attack if it knocks an item off and a 65 base power if it doesn't which is garbage without stab and its just above technician boost so it doesn't make other dark type moves pointless and with megas returning knock off is going to get a bunch of mons capable of soaking them up.

I loved using Togekiss in-game, Air Slash+Aura Sphere murdering everything with near perfect coverage and Thunder Wave to make the flinchhax easier and also support.

My friend described Togetic as a swan. I guess DP made him a bigger swan, but brought back the egg shape to bookend the line.

Togekiss is the counterpart to Garchomp. People don't realize this but they are meant to be a couple.
First of all both are introduced in gen 4 and Cynthia gives you a Togepi egg at the beginning of Platinum and we all know what her strongest pokemon is.
Then the typing (new and old) and the stats spread gives it also away.
Lastly thematically, just look at the names, a kiss juxtaposed to a chomp.
