This is a game from 2008 that will also run on a toaster.

This industry is 100% fucking cooked.

When games stopped being static linear corridor theme parks, and started going towards open world with night/day cycle and physics/destructability. Baked lighting sucks ass in those scenarios.

I always thought it was odd how damn good the sound work for gunfire was, violent and percussive with stuff like Doppler shift and distance/onscuration muffling that made it incredibly immersive and realistic. Very cool, but odd for a game that emphasizes hand to hand combat if you must fight. Then BF3 came out and I realized it was probably an earlier version of that sound system and they were pleased enough with it they wanted to use it as soon as they could.

It had the most realistic 'tearing/stretching plastic' effect Ive ever seen in a game. No other game has even ATTEMPTED those physics as far as I know.

Yes. Baked lighting makes no sense in games in which you can affect the environment or its illumination.
Do you think it's a coincidence that Doom 2016 and Eternal (100% baked lighting) had the most static, uninteractive levels in the whole franchise, and then the game that abandoned baked lighting immediately gained proper physics and destructibility and larger maps and more advanced illumination?

i agree this is why baked lighting is faulty at times but most modern games now are still linear games with basic level designs and rarely is there proper physics so ditching baked lighting at once is just ridiculous given the state of game design right now

yes anon old games were smaller in size because magic and the heccin genius devs of old!
and not because they only had 1 set of very low resolution textures and now you expect them to fucking bake the lighting for the 4k textures AND 1080p textures AND 720p textures and 640p and 480p... because it's gotta run on my 2007 laptop or else it's lazy and unoptimized!
you think baking that shit doesn't take a massive amount of time and space that no compression algorithm is going to fix? all for the sake of an inferior lighting model so that pablo can run it

And this is an attempt at baked lighting in UE5.
Shadows are low resolution, ignore solid geometry (look under the car), and the engine can't seem to properly handle those transparent wines during baking, so it just made the wall pitch black.
Does it at least run good? Nope.

Super wasteful. A bit more labor on the devs' part could save way more resources (both money and compute) on that last mile.
Also they could just release texture packs. It's not like game installs are plug-and-play these days anyway, one more step won't hurt.

It was a common stock PhysX effect. Pretty sure Borderlands 2 had the same effect. Also I never liked it because surprise surprise, in a game with a super intensive baked GI lighting model, the dynamic cloth isnโ€™t lit correctly and canโ€™t cast shadows, so it doesnโ€™t fit in with anything else in the game.

I will say PhysX COULD have actually made games better by making the world more dynamic in terms of the actual physical simulations involve. I don't think any devs actually used it this way, but it had potential to be quite innovative.

There's literally no real use case for modern raytracing techniques in gaming that either baked lighting or other less computationally intensive lighting methods can't do. It's literally a solution seeking a problem.
