That's actually referenced in Wesker's Report 2, which is a pretty good read tbqh.
Annette was one of their coworkers in the Arklay mansion. When she got preggers, Wesker mentions how insane would be for "normies" to marry and raise a kid while doing the type of work they were doing. But on a second thought, he realizes that Annette was also a mad scientist so that wasn't really problem.
Regarding Wesker, he did have a son. A son who ironically ends up dating Birkin's daughter. A son who was raised by a single mother because she kept it a secret from Wesker in the first place. However, she still loved him which is why she never allowed Jake to disrespect him. It may seem a bit tragic but it was just the opposite type of relationship Birkin had. Annette was just as mad as Birkin. Wesker's girlfriend was not. And that's why it didn't work out, even though they might had feelings for each other.
Who knows, maybe that breakup was the last straw in Wesker's mental health. If the girl was willing to raise his child alone and still love him, then that means they had a good thing going on at some point.
