Off-topic, but I have to ask. Is this site loading extremely slowly for anyone else? Images takes forever to load and are blurry. When I click images I get file not found. It's been going on for like a week now. Anyone else or just me?

Johnathan meeting Dracula is only like the first chapter of the book. Most of the book is them writing letters/diary entries to each other. Which is a satire on the Victorian romance novel. Stoker was basically making fun of the genre by having a Vampire show up, kill the love interest, and then make them chase him back to Romania. And it was actually more fun to read than I expected.

And no movie or game has ever fucking adapted it right. They try to adapt it into a serious movie. And also ruin Mina's character.

Holy shit I was going to say almost the same thing.

But then I thought about it and I realized I wanted the metroidvania movement powerups to be the gatekeepers of newer parts of the map, and giving the player too many movement options clashes with the slow and deliberate combat pace of DS1.

Still, good on you for appreciating level design and exploration.

It's one of my favorites for the mechanical freedom of tags and assists and being able to two-in-one almost anything. Its level design is also the most focused out of the still-open Igavanias. Switching out Charlotte's spells can get annoying though.

I beat Order of Ecclesia for the first time today, it was a neat game and I generally liked it, though grinding for sidequest items and glyphs got tedious at times (not sure if it was better or worse than grinding the cards in Circle of the Moon, which is the only other Castlevania game I've fully beaten). The glyph system was fun to mess around with even if I got complacent and spammed Nitesco once I got it. I also really liked Shanoa and I was legitimately surprised by the twists and turns involving Albus. Also while Dracula's fight was fun and exploring his castle was also pretty neat, I think Barlowe stole the show in terms of villains and that the game peaked with his boss fight. His hammy voice lines, his batshit insane fighting style, that fucking punch combo, I feel like even when I immerse myself further in the series, it's still going to stick out as one of my favorite fights.

Not sure where to go from here: I'm thinking about going back to either the first game (got filtered by what I think was an underwater cave) or the fourth (got sidetracked by other games and never went back lmao) and finishing them, but I'm also contemplating Symphony of the Night since it seems to be one of the biggest defining games in the series.

It's definitely worth playing through. It's actually easier than CV1 and 3 in terms of combat difficulty. Once you get just one whip enhancement and the fire orb. The issue is, most people get frustrated even before that and quit.

The thing is, just use a guide to find the items. Because town names and NPC hints are poorly localized and actually point you in the wrong direction.

The game could be one of the best games in the series with a remake.

I really want a Castlevania V and VI. IV is a remake of 1 so why not remake 2 with the same style of 8 directional whipping as IV? Make the game harder obvious and ramp up the level design a little more and change around sub items. But the story of Simon killing Dracula, and then having to resurrect Dracula to end his curse is cool. You can then make a sequel to 2 where Dracula escapes from Simon, now Simon is responsible for bringing Dracula back and him being cursed could add new gameplay elements as you have to beat Dracula once and for all.

I should count myself extremely lucky it only happened with the start menu and during second and third air dashes and jumps. It made the platforming sections that required those moves a coin flip as to whether he'd do it or just fall out of the air while I was mashing the button. That was very tedious but was an otherwise small slice of the game. I would've dropped the game if it did that during combat, that's game breaking.

Hes definitely got everything but the actual coding of the game itself down to an art form. Setting aside the dropped inputs and janky retro design decisions of treating the game like its limited to a GBA layout yet still having a SOTN amount of skills the game is really really good.
I noticed on the credits that he hired some company to port it to consoles so hes not averse to hiring outside help.
Also, I don't know what the publisher's cut is but I saw the physical switch version on amazon and it said 700 copies sold this month like a month after it came out, unlike his fan games he definitely made some money off it. Hopefully his next game he hires someone or like you said kickstart it, I'd throw money at it without question.

>And the graphics.
The graphics are worse in Dawn because they're resized sprites from the GBA and PS1. Especially Alucard's sprite. But many enemies also look bad. And more importantly, have whack hit boxes. It's the epitome of phoning it in. IGA just copy pasted stuff from previous games into Dawn.
>And the level design.
Are you fucking kidding? It's one of the worst castles in the series.
>And the enemy variety
90% of enemies are just recycled from SotN or Aria.
>and weapon variety
Literally took Aria's system of 100+ weapons and then watered it down to 8 weapons. "B-but the weapons change when you upgrade them!" But they're still stuck as the same 8 models. And some of the final upgrades are worse than the second to last ones you get.

I replayed it last year, and the only thing that aged fucking poorly about it is the floaty platforming with LOCKED UNHELPFUL CAMERA ANGLES that just leads to outright deaths for misjudging the distance. I beat it a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. If you enjoyed Lecarde 2, then it's just more of that. If you didn't play it, then the first 20% of the game doesn't exactly do it many favors. If you're not sure what to do, you might end up going through the 3 long-ass countryside areas more times than you have to looking for what you need. It's when you get to the castle that it gets good. The place is fucking huge, takes a lot of effort to explore, has some puzzle solving, and it feels dangerous.

There's also a huge amount of upgrades, relics and items to get. A lot of them (boots in particular) are just for passing certain terrain, and a bunch of relics only let you get through one particular room or survive a deathtrap. There's quite a few rooms that will just kill you in various fashions if you don't either have the relic that protects you from it, or in some cases you have to use a certain power to survive it. iirc all of these deathtraps except one are foreshadowed pretty well. I saw there were some people who were frustrated by the amount of kill rooms, but personally I enjoyed them for the atmosphere they added.

The particularly bad: when you go out of the pause menu, there's about half a second of game that happens before you can do anything. That sucks when you've just spent potions to refill your hp, and one of the 20 hazards on the screen hit you before you can do anything.

It basically slowly transforms from a pseudo classicvania into rondo of blood / sotn hybrid that leans more and more into sotn as it goes on. I played here and there at first but at some point it got addicting and it kept getting better and better until the castle when it really hits its stride. They are slaves of Dracula but their loyalty allows them to keep coming back like Dracula himself. A regular vampire stays dead after being killed.

I was thinking that the idea was vampires are fallen humans: creatures with humans' infinite potential without their finite time and having a corrupted version of human will. Humans are arguably the strongest characters in the setting.

That's why I specified a difference between thralls and lesser vampires. The series has actual vampires seperate from Dracula. And I agree this creates a problem because Dracula probably would just kill them. But they always have them somehow trying to revive Dracula, for reasons unknown. Dracula usually just kills them as he's awaking so it's dumb.

But the lore for Castlevania before IGA also wasn't that deep. Literally just "we saw something in a horror film and copied it." So a bunch of vampires wanting to revive Dracula because [reasons not given] is all the plot they needed. It fell apart when IGA tried to make everything work. And then he ironically broke it even worse with 1999 and Lament/Curse of Darkness/Judgement.

The music samples are better in Japanese, no matter your opinion. I prefer the NES version of the Clock Tower song. But that's just because I heard it a million times as a kid and that's the one that imprinted on me. And because the clicking of the cogs sounds cool alongside the bit music. But when I put my nostalgia aside, I can admit every song is better in the Japanese original. Helped by having a CD with all the songs playing themselves and no SFX.

It's pretty meh. The music is alright, but the gameplay felt like it didn't know what to focus on, as it tried to introduce new mechanics every so often, which each felt unnecessary or more underbaked than the last. The weirdest one of these is that you get sort of a ghost that follows after you, which really only serves the purpose to break blocks you otherwise wouldn't be able to. That's not too bad on its own, but the ghost is then never used for anything interesting, just some static obstacles you have to cut down to proceed.
Upon beating the game you unlock another playable character, and arguably playing her is more fun, but I still wouldn't recommend the game, unless you're absolutely starved for some classicvania style game.
