It does a lore cleanup since DS1 and Martyr don't line up with anything DS2-onwards, the issue there being most Dead Space fans prefer the pre-DS2 lore, at least it seems that way.

It fixes up the weapons a bit, but the original wasn't exactly nonfunctional to begin with. If you wanted the Flamethrower to be better, it is now.

The whole "peeling" system is neat on paper, but in the heat of the moment you don't even notice it.

All in all, it was very unnecessary, moreso than Resident Evil 4's remake, and I'm glad they're not remaking Dead Space 2.

It was incredible. It almost completely invalidates the original. Unfortunately, some of the remake's characters give worse performances than the original (Hammond, Dr. Kyne, Captain Mathias), so I can't say it COMPLETELY replaces the original, but it's good enough that I can confidently say you won't need to play the original, just watch the cutscenes on youtube.

Oh, but it did nerf the original game's best weapon into one of its worst, which was a fucking bummer, but it's not like that ruins the game or anything.

The pulse rifle. In the original, it did high damage and effortless stunlocked most enemies no matter where you shot them. In the remake, the damage is piss poor, and it can't stun for shit anymore. All it's good for is as a grenade launcher, and even then the damage isn't all that great.

The open plan Ishimura was fucking inspired and every gun looks and feels better. It’s a harder, more fun, less janky combat experience in general. Graphics are excellent but more importantly the art direction is maintained. Everything looks great, exceptions being face animations are pretty uncanny valley and the endgame military armor looks terrible for some reason.

The plot is an objective downgrade. They overcomplicate the obvious twist in an attempt to make it less obvious but it doesn’t hit nearly as hard. Also, they butcher the captain character. His rivalry with the double agent is completely gone and in its place he just whines about his dead friend, which would be a choice except that for the double agent girl the rivalry is still going. So instead of a back and forth where you don’t know who to trust, he sobs about the dead guy then she kicks him while he’s down and the game still wants to you be unsure who to choose.

Talking Isaac is a double edged sword. He sounds great cuz gunner wright always does, but he’s only as scared as he sounds in ds2 so the panicked Everyman angle kinda falls away. Also, his ability to be proactive and suggest solutions further humiliates the captain, who’s got even less to do.

All in all definitely worth a play, objectively a good game, but still inferior to the OG on presentstion.

One Gun is still doable on Impossible mode, not a fan that to prevent "save scumming" they lock the load game option, but they're more than happy to let you quit to menu to prevent dying or redoing an encounter you might have lost too much ammo or health for. Also it was nice that they made a stasis upgrade that does damage overtime, though making it do the layer damage shit makes the limbs smaller sometimes.

I was skeptical about it myself. I only bought it because it was on sale for $7 on Xbox, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The biggest change they added is the ability to back track. They also have necromorphs pop up again in areas you've already cleared from time to time to keep you on your toes. I was against the idea of giving Isaac a voice, given how obnoxious he was in 2 and 3, but they didn't fuck it up too bad. He's just really bland, which is fine. It's not like anyone plays this shit for the story and characters anyway.

The one story beat the remake really nails was the fight between isaac and nicole as their last communication. It retroactively makes ds2 even stronger with his guilt over her dieing and strengthens him wanting to be there on the ship trying to find him. I said this in a DS thread a few weeks back, I lost my mom to suicide almost a decade ago and while we had a lot more good times than bad we did fight sometimes and that feeling of not being able to go back and apologize for stupid shit hurts tenfold when the person is not longer there to talk to. The remake nailed that with that convo and marker nicole's lines after to isaac.

True. Played the second Dead Space game first, then the third, then went back and played the first game + watched the anime. The first game and the anime are in a league of their own.
Dead Space is a great horror game. Up there with Silent Hill or Resident Evil. Dead Space 2 kind of sucked, the gore is great, but they turned Isaac into RDJ Tony Stark from Iron Man and turned the engineering suit into the Iron Man suit because the Iron Man movie was so popular at the time. Isaac is now a snarky quippy badass and the suit is just a knock off of Iron Man, right down to the propulsion system. It changed the mood of the series quite a bit, where the first game is more atmospheric. The second game and third games have their moments, but they're far more inconsistent. The second game is action setpiece: the video game. The third game is just a straight up co-op shooter.
Not that the second and third games are bad, but it definitely went hard into super hero shenanigans. I'm surprised at no point during the second game did Isaac yell "BOOYAH!" while reloading, that's the vibe.

Don't listen to all the haters. Because I know some of them didn't play the OG because they fumbled some of the details of the OG.
The remake is a much more superior version, at the very least gameplay wise.
The weapons are balanced much better now and some have changes that make them much more fun to use too, you can actually use spikes with kinesis which actually makes it useful to use compared to OG, zero-g sections aren't a clunky mess now and a slew of other improvements. I think my most favourite change overall is that you can actually equips every suit looks even after upgrading, I remember replaying the OG and not upgrading past Level 3 at all because it's my overall most fav look but now I don't have to worry about it in the remake.
I will agree some of the performances are much worse but at least Isaac is great, he's actually a fucking Engineer now instead of an errand boy.

With the original I had trouble with vsync, resolution and framerates.
