A lot of modern discourse surrounding games is complete bullshit, and I think the average person simply doesn't have the fucking energy to come up with a counterargument. I think a lot of people would agree DMC1 is a better game than FF16, but how do you even make that case? FF16 is longer, has more elaborate bossfights, tons of abilities, skill trees which DMC1 does not have. Dark souls is noticeably more sluggish in the way the character moves and attacks compared to demons, going back and forth between the two demons feels like an arcade game with how unrealistic you zip around. A bunch of my friends were really salty when dark came out because of how slo-mo dark felt coming off demons until they acclimated to the game. Of course it didn't help that the game was running at a near constant 20fps on ps3 at launch, PTD edition felt like a revelation when that came out.

It is highly unlikely NG4 will be as amazing as NGB or NGII, but to be fair not even Itagaki seems capable of replicating that level of quality.
It will still be a great game though, and hopefully it'll be successful enough to get another sequel, and ideally also motivate other japanese publishers and dev teams to produce more character action games.

I bought a ps3 in 2013 specifically to play demon's souls after nolifing dark souls for 2 years and I still think it's a pretty good game, but I liked DaS more overall. I still wish they kept the stance and moveset you get when you 2-hand a 1 handed weapon. From what I remembered, Latria and Boletaria carried the game hard for me and I liked how the areas themselves were way larger in scope even if they were split up into separate levels. I wish they would have been able to achieve that level of scope seamlessly into DaS.

A classic beat ’em up with two attack buttons and a jump contains more philosophy than a modern action opus with its flowcharts of unlockable systems and upgrade menus. Why? Because systems are not intelligence, they are a crutch, training wheels for players terrified of actual play.

The beat ’em up is pure ontology: movement, strike, space, consequence. You cannot hide behind mechanics. There is no alibi in skill trees, no defense in parry windows engineered to the frame, no comfort in adaptive difficulty. The game simply exists as it is, and you must exist with it.

Modern design is terrified of this nakedness. Instead, it piles mechanics on mechanics, stacking gimmicks like a chef who drowns every dish in sauce to mask the lack of flavor. The player becomes less a fighter and more a janitor of systems, sweeping up quest markers, polishing skill trees, and emptying progress bars. What once was raw action has been reduced to maintenance work, busy labor dressed up as play.

The β€˜dumb’ and 'outdated' brawler in its arcade cabinet is smarter than your modernized epic hardcore games. It has the courage to be simple, the courage to say: hit or be hit. Everything else is cowardice disguised as depth.

Souls players talk about β€˜difficulty’ as if it’s some holy grail, but hand them a single credit in a real arcade and they crumble before Stage 2. They mistake repetition with checkpoints for mastery. A Souls clear is endurance with infinite retries; a 1CC is performance under absolute scarcity. One is training wheels disguised as torment, the other is tightrope without a net.

So let’s be honest: Souls players don’t beat games, they wear them down. Give them a 1CC requirement and they’d vanish into dust, leaving only the echo of β€˜git gud’ reverberating against the continue screen.

I personally prefer the term hack n slash, but you have to speak in a way that most people will get what you mean.

Genre names can be confusing for new players. E.g. If Mork called them hack b slashes, what would he call God Hand then? Beat'em up? Then new players might confuse it with a 2d beat'em up.
This is why Metal Slug is currently known as a "run & gun" instead of a shoot'em up, to avoid ambiguity.

You could arguably stop and grind level ups to get past a boss or tough encounter in a number of games (whether it's more traditional JRPG, or something more action oriented like Ys: the Oath in Felghana), but how bad of an issue that is varies by game. I usually tend to just think that giving the option to grind is just a way for developers to let players take the easy (albeit slower and more tedious) way out if needed.

Most games with stat sheets and item drops with more buffs are like that. You get that build going in Diablo or PoE and you're flying through the screen with anything that poses a challenge being purely on the basis of a DPS check. Soulslikes can be like this but it feels more like cheesing than being a god in most normal play

A system can have good rewards if you engage with it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the system is without flaws. An example of this could be the steal ability in final fantasy games netting you some good rewards here and there, but it can have abysmally low success chance, which either leads to tedium or players not using the skill at all.
With Demon's Souls specifically, I'd almost argue the tendency system's problem lies in how easy it is to abuse or nullify it, which leads to the whole suicide jumping at Nexus for some players. Doing so won't net you the best stuff, but you never really need it either, so yeah, suicide jumping time it is.

No it doesn't. Its implementation in Dark Souls is so much better because all you had to do to get hostile phantoms was to reverse hollowing with a single humanity. Granted, there really wasn't much bonus content aside from multiplayer shenanigans. What Demon Souls did is fucking up your entire zone by dying the more you do it which is utterly retarded because nobody then would want to ever be human. That's not punishment, that's making your players not want to engage with said mechanic.

I think he's much more consistent when he's not trying to make himself play new releases to quickly offer an opinion. A lot of his biggest misgivings with Ragebound also apply to other games he's reviewed much more favorably (having to equip debuffs and enable S++ bad, playing Order of Ecclesia on level 1 hard mode with specific glyphs good, and so forth)

In general he's a lot more reliable when talking about arcade games. Most of the time when he's talking about something longer than an hour it sounds like he wishes he wasn't

Why does Mork feel like if you gave him the beta release of a game, tell him it's the full release, then he'd come with all these intricate ideas on how the game is perfect.
