How did gacha games win over gookMMOs? Genuinely asking, is it because of a lack of a consistent flow of content on the behalf of korean MMOs? I don't play gacha games so idk what's actually appealing about them besides the avatars, which as far as I'm aware of, you can't even customize aesthetically. I don't play gookmmos either but I'm not really sure where they went wrong and started failing massively, it seems to have been somewhere in the mid to late 2010s.

I don't think banning gambling is censorship, though I don't think it should be banned, it should just automatically net your game an AO (or equivalent) rating.
I would like for game devs to just self-regulate and *not* fill their games with tons of predatory gambling shit, but I don't think that's ever going to happen given how greedy vidya publishers tend to be, so I don't see the harm in just making it so only adults can spend real money on microtransactions.

Korean MMOs have the same gay slot machine shit where you pay money to increase the stats on your stat stick and pay money for cosmetics to make your character sexy or whatever, but what do they fail to do that gachas do more successfully? I'm trying to understand how one genre arose out of another one dying since they both have a pretty enormous overlap in playerbase.

Because gachaslop makes way more money. Gook MMOs had player competition and lots of pointless engagement, gachaslop is based around getting the retard to play an hour each day and pull out his wallet to roll for the new broken character that helps him do his dailies slightly faster every month.

It's just a refined version of the same formula. People don't want the MMO elements, they just want to know there are other people playing the same single player garbage. Because there is no actual content, whales never get frustrated and quit because they can't beat a boss, all that changes is how fast they can beat their dailies.
