Hollow Knight is the most successful Metroidvania ever, more than the individual games that gave the genre its name.
So since it's the only game a lot ofpeople know of the genre, it's elevates it in a lot of people's eyes (which is the case because the good art style/music/etc gets people in the door, and the actual gameplay is incredibly solid once you're deep in it)

Because sometimes quantity is part of the strategy, anon. Not everything needs to be a magnum opus that takes a decade to produce and ends up as a bloated mess *cough* Starfield *cough*. Some devs just make focused games, release them, and move on. Not every dish needs to be filet mignon-sometimes you just want some damn good fries.
