better agility supposedly. But structurally it adds weight and is still constrained by angle of attack and stall speed while thrust vectoring isn't, and if you add enough vectored thrust even a brick can dogfight.

but low speed agility is kind of irrelevant nowadays compared to muh low RCS.

They're surprisingly rare in Ace Combat, really. It's weird enough to practically be designed for that series, but there are very few notable characters that use them. There's Gault like you said, and that's about it. Grabacr/Ofnir maybe? Except not only are they kinda losers, but they have a whole bunch of planes so it's not really associated with them.

i don't understand why it took so long for planes to get sleek looking blended bodywork like the current 5th and 6th gens. Did people just not care about rcs in the past? Surely shaping material the way you want is an easy problem compared to all the other problems you're solving with the plane like the engines and so on.

Having weird contours means the plane becomes more expensive to maintain and get parts for, since segment 320-A can ONLY be replaced by another exact measurement segment 320-A part, instead of the whole cabin being made of the same panels in a tube. Commercial planes dont give a fuck about marginal savings in aerodynamic at the cost of elevated maintenance.

rcs reduction has been pursued since the 50s, old techniques were just cruder and less effective. airplane body shape is a constant process of compromise between conflicting needs like aerodynamics and rcs and available materials, required range, etc. look up the hopeless diamond and the rcs reduction techniques used on the a-12 and kingfish

the air gets confused. some is taken by surprise and acts the usual way: going from the plane nose to the tail and so the plane is lifted upwards.
the rest of the air turns away from the wings and pulls the plane with it. the design is very smart

The time limit was very tight and I failed it once because of that.
Also re-entry was very bullshit because you must take a very specific angle and speed within a short time span otherwise you instantly explode.

Biggest factor why they never went far past experiments is that they tend to get bent and wear out way faster thanks to going against the grain or whatever you call the physics/aeronautical term of that .

So like all things price is the biggest factor, not ability

I still find it endlessly hilarious that stealth as a concept was invented by the Soviets, and the Soviet military command took one look at the research and said "Useless" because they didn't have the computers to simulate it forcing the researcher to publish his works publically... Which was immediately found by CIA assets, sent back to the US allowing the US to skulljump the Soviets eternally on stealth technology which they still have no recovered from. F-35 notwithstanding, I still think the YF-32 should have won. Hell, the YF-23 should have won because it was stealthier but that's neither here nor there

I wish military planes looked as cool as pic related. I mean the Tu-160 counts a bit I guess.

But still. Growing up we were fucking hyped for the future with the F117 and Concorde. And got the worst outcome possible in terms of aesthetics. Damn you physics, the bane of all things cool

If it makes you feel any better the overland supersonic ban was recently lifted in the US a month ago because of Trump which gives back the market that these would have thrived on thanks to developments in quieting sonic booms with various tech. If anything we may be on the precipice of a new supersonic renaissance, though they will be mostly smaller passenger jets closer to small regional airliners but travelling at speeds that make continental travel crazy fast.

Forgot to attach a picture >>719245438 but obviously it doesn't share the same level of cool but it's still somewhere between the Concord and 2707. Shame they turned some of the special airports built for SSTs into other things including one that got turned into Alligator Alcatraz... Though I figure these smaller jets can probably land on smaller runways so maybe that makes the need for the supersized SST airports obsolete.

I thought they could be pushed and retracted, as in when flying supersonic they would go forward until the entire front is covered and when flying subsonic they would retract like in the pictures.
It was a misunderstanding from a junior easy build Airfix kit for the MiG-21 that I had as a child.

>if you add enough vectored thrust even a brick can dogfight.
Only if you add thrusters directly below the plane, like a VTOL plane. Vectored thrust like on an F-22 of Su-35 only helps with rotating the plane, not turning.
